Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Medical Assistant Jobs at University of Rochester Jobs
Align your credentials to New York requirements
New York does not require Medical Assistants to hold a state license, but University of Rochester hiring managers favor candidates with a nationally recognized certification like CMA or RMA. Confirm your credential is active before applying.
Target departments with chronic staffing needs
University of Rochester's outpatient clinics, specialty practices, and ambulatory care units post Medical Assistant openings more frequently than inpatient settings. Filter your job search to these departments, where sponsorship conversations are more routine.
Distinguish your visa type early in conversations
F-1 OPT candidates should clarify whether their remaining authorized period covers the typical H-1B processing timeline. If your OPT expires before an October 1 H-1B start date, ask the recruiter directly whether a cap-gap or early filing strategy is feasible.
Use Migrate Mate to surface open Medical Assistant roles
University of Rochester posts Medical Assistant positions across multiple portals and they fill quickly. Use Migrate Mate to browse current openings filtered by sponsorship eligibility so you're applying to roles that are actively open to international candidates.
Prepare for PERM labor market requirements if pursuing EB-2 or EB-3
Permanent residency through EB-2 or EB-3 requires the employer to complete a DOL PERM recruitment process first. For a Medical Assistant role, document any specialized clinical skills or bilingual patient care abilities that help differentiate your application from U.S. applicants.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer
As a large academic employer, University of Rochester participates in E-Verify, which is required to employ F-1 OPT candidates. Verify this during the offer stage so your work authorization is processed without delays before your start date.

Find Medical Assistant at University of Rochester JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Rochester sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Assistants?
Yes, University of Rochester has a documented history of sponsoring H-1B visas for healthcare support roles including Medical Assistants. Sponsorship is not automatic with every offer, so raise it directly during the recruiting process. The university's size and established HR infrastructure mean it has the legal and administrative capacity to manage H-1B petitions for qualifying positions.
How do I apply for Medical Assistant jobs at University of Rochester?
Applications go through the University of Rochester's careers portal at jobs.rochester.edu, where Medical Assistant openings are listed by department and location. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse current openings filtered specifically for international candidates who need visa sponsorship, which saves time searching manually across multiple listings.
Which visa types does University of Rochester commonly use for Medical Assistant roles?
University of Rochester sponsors across several visa categories for healthcare roles, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, J-1 for exchange-based placements, and F-1 OPT or CPT for students in eligible programs. Candidates pursuing permanent residency may also be considered for EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship, subject to the DOL PERM process.
What qualifications does University of Rochester look for in Medical Assistant candidates?
University of Rochester generally expects a Medical Assistant diploma or associate degree from an accredited program, along with a national certification such as CMA through AAMA or RMA through AMT. Clinical experience in a high-volume outpatient or specialty setting strengthens your application. Bilingual patient communication skills are frequently listed as preferred qualifications across several of their campus and off-site clinic locations.
How do I plan my timeline when pursuing H-1B sponsorship for a Medical Assistant role at University of Rochester?
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be filed once per year, with a registration window in March and an October 1 start date if selected. If you're on F-1 OPT, your program end date needs to allow enough runway to cover the filing and potential cap-gap period. Work with the university's immigration team as early as the offer stage so USCIS deadlines don't catch either party off guard.
