Tips for Finding Medical Assistant Jobs at Eastern Virginia Medical School
Align Your Certification to EVMS Standards
EVMS clinical roles typically require CMA or RMA certification from an accredited program. Verify your credential is recognized by CAAHEP or ABHES before applying, as uncertified candidates are routinely screened out before sponsorship conversations begin.
Target Academic Medical Centers Deliberately
Academic health systems like EVMS operate under different hiring pressures than private clinics. They run structured recruitment cycles tied to academic calendars, so apply in late summer and early spring when clinical staffing needs peak across teaching departments.
Request Clarity on PERM Before Accepting
EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship for Medical Assistants requires the employer to complete PERM labor certification through DOL. Before signing an offer, confirm whether EVMS has initiated or is prepared to begin the PERM process for your specific role.
Use OPT Strategically to Build EVMS Tenure
If you're on F-1 OPT, joining EVMS as a Medical Assistant before your OPT window closes gives the employer time to evaluate your fit and build the internal case for longer-term sponsorship. File your OPT extension early so employment gaps don't interrupt continuity.
Confirm E-Verify Enrollment Before Your Start Date
Federal contractors and academic medical institutions are often E-Verify participants. Check that EVMS has verified its E-Verify enrollment status, because your I-9 process and work authorization timeline depend on it running through that system correctly from day one.
Find Open Roles Through Migrate Mate
Filtering for Medical Assistant openings at visa-sponsoring employers in academic healthcare takes time manually. Use Migrate Mate to surface EVMS Medical Assistant roles filtered by sponsorship history, so you're targeting positions where international hiring has actually happened.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Eastern Virginia Medical School sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Assistants?
H-1B visa sponsorship for Medical Assistant roles is uncommon at most employers because the position doesn't always meet USCIS's specialty occupation threshold, which requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field as a minimum requirement. EVMS more commonly sponsors Medical Assistants through EB-2 or EB-3 employment-based Green Card pathways, which are better suited to the educational and credentialing profile of this role.
How do I apply for Medical Assistant jobs at Eastern Virginia Medical School?
Applications go through EVMS's official careers portal. Search for Medical Assistant openings, confirm the role aligns with your certification type (CMA or RMA), and submit your resume along with proof of credential. If you need visa sponsorship, address your work authorization status directly in your cover letter so recruiters can route your application to the appropriate HR process without delay.
Which visa types does EVMS commonly use for Medical Assistant roles?
EVMS has a history of sponsoring Medical Assistants through F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, TN visa, J-1 visa, and employment-based Green Card categories including EB-2 and EB-3. TN visas apply only to Canadian and Mexican nationals working in qualifying occupations. J-1 sponsorship is typically tied to exchange visitor programs, while EB-3 is the most common permanent residency pathway for allied health roles at academic medical institutions.
What qualifications does EVMS expect for Medical Assistant candidates needing sponsorship?
EVMS generally expects Medical Assistants to hold a CMA credential from a CAAHEP-accredited program or an RMA from an ABHES-accredited program. Clinical experience in a supervised healthcare setting strengthens your application. For Green Card sponsorship via PERM, DOL requires that the role have a defined minimum qualification, so your credentials must match the specific requirements stated in the job posting precisely.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Medical Assistant at EVMS?
Timeline depends heavily on the visa type. OPT authorization can be in place within 90 days of your program end date if you file on time with USCIS. Employment-based Green Card sponsorship through EB-3 involves PERM labor certification, which DOL currently processes in several months to over a year, followed by I-140 petition filing. Use Migrate Mate to identify current EVMS openings so you can start the timeline as early as possible.
