Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Medical Doctor Jobs at University of Rochester Jobs
Confirm your medical credentials are U.S.-ready
ECFMG certification is a hard requirement for international medical graduates applying to U.S. clinical roles. Have your primary source verification and USMLE scores documented before you apply, as University of Rochester will expect these upfront.
Target departments with ongoing physician recruitment
University of Rochester's medical center consistently recruits across primary care, hospital medicine, and specialty departments. Focusing your applications on departments with faculty or attending vacancies, rather than research-only posts, improves your chances of a sponsorship-eligible offer.
Understand how J-1 waivers intersect with H-1B sponsorship
Many international physicians enter the U.S. on J-1 exchange visitor visas for residency or fellowship. If you completed training on J-1, you'll need a Conrad 30 waiver or other J-1 waiver before University of Rochester can petition for H-1B status on your behalf.
Ask about specialty occupation documentation early
USCIS requires employers to show a Medical Doctor role qualifies as a specialty occupation. University of Rochester's legal team handles this, but you should provide detailed documentation of your degree, licensure, and board certifications to support the I-129 petition without delays.
Use Migrate Mate to find open physician roles with sponsorship
Searching broadly for physician openings wastes time on positions that won't consider visa sponsorship. Browse Medical Doctor listings at University of Rochester directly on Migrate Mate, which filters for employers with verified sponsorship history so you're applying where it counts.
Align your state medical license timeline with your offer
New York requires full licensure before you can practice independently, and the licensing timeline can run several months. Start your New York State Education Department application as soon as you have a conditional offer, so licensing doesn't delay your start date or H-1B filing window.

Find Medical Doctor at University of Rochester JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Rochester sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Doctors?
Yes, University of Rochester sponsors H-1B visas for Medical Doctors in both clinical and academic roles. The university has an established international hiring infrastructure through its medical center and regularly petitions USCIS for physicians. You'll need to have ECFMG certification, a qualifying job offer, and any prior J-1 waiver obligations resolved before the H-1B petition can be filed.
Which visa types does University of Rochester commonly use for Medical Doctor roles?
University of Rochester supports several visa categories for Medical Doctors. H-1B is the most common for attending and faculty physicians. J-1 is widely used for residents and fellows in GME programs. TN is available for Canadian and Mexican physicians meeting USMCA criteria. For physicians pursuing permanent residency, the university also sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card petitions, often through the PERM labor certification process.
What qualifications does University of Rochester expect for Medical Doctor positions?
Expectations vary by role, but most Medical Doctor positions require a medical degree from an accredited institution, ECFMG certification for international medical graduates, and either active New York State licensure or eligibility for it. Academic positions often expect board certification or board eligibility in a relevant specialty. Research-focused roles may also require a track record of peer-reviewed publications or grant funding.
How do I apply for Medical Doctor jobs at University of Rochester?
Start by identifying open Medical Doctor roles through Migrate Mate, which surfaces University of Rochester listings filtered for visa sponsorship. Applications go through the university's careers portal and typically require a CV, cover letter, and credentials documentation. For clinical roles, contact from a department chair or physician recruiter often follows an initial application review before a formal interview is scheduled.
How do I plan my timeline if I need visa sponsorship for a Medical Doctor role at University of Rochester?
The timeline depends on your current status. If you're completing residency or fellowship on a J-1, build in time for waiver processing, which can take three to six months through the Conrad 30 program. H-1B petitions can be filed under cap-exempt status for university employers, meaning there's no lottery wait and filings can happen year-round. New York medical licensure processing adds additional lead time, so starting early is essential.
