Tips for Finding Medical Doctor Jobs at UT Southwestern Medical Center
Align your credentials with ACGME requirements
UT Southwestern requires board eligibility or board certification for most Medical Doctor positions. If you trained outside the U.S., confirm your ECFMG certification is current before applying, as it's a prerequisite USCIS will scrutinize during H-1B adjudication.
Target departments with active recruitment cycles
UT Southwestern's academic medicine structure means hiring happens at the department level, not centrally. Internal medicine, surgery, and oncology divisions recruit most actively. Apply directly to departments where your subspecialty fits their clinical or research mission.
Clarify your visa category before the offer stage
H-1B, E-3 visa, and TN each carry different employer obligations for physician roles. Raise your visa status early in conversations with the hiring department so UT Southwestern's immigration team can confirm which pathway fits your nationality and training timeline.
Understand how GME training affects your status
If you're completing a residency or fellowship at UT Southwestern on J-1 visa or F-1 OPT, your transition to an attending physician role requires a separate sponsorship filing. Factor the H-1B cap timeline or OPT extension window into your contract negotiation.
Search Medical Doctor openings through Migrate Mate
Filter by visa type and institution to surface active Medical Doctor roles at UT Southwestern that explicitly support sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces the sponsorship history you need to prioritize applications where the path to authorization is already established.
Request LCA details before signing your offer letter
The Labor Condition Application, filed with DOL, locks in your prevailing wage level and work location. For physicians moving between UT Southwestern campuses, verify the LCA covers all sites where you'll see patients to avoid status compliance issues.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does UT Southwestern Medical Center sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Doctors?
Yes, UT Southwestern Medical Center sponsors H-1B visas for Medical Doctor positions. As an academic medical center, it qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, meaning petitions can be filed at any time of year without waiting for the annual lottery. This is a significant advantage for international physicians who can't afford to wait for an October start date.
How do I apply for Medical Doctor jobs at UT Southwestern Medical Center?
Applications are submitted through UT Southwestern's careers portal, where Medical Doctor openings are listed by department and specialty. Shortlisted candidates typically go through a faculty interview panel before an offer is extended. You can also browse current openings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate to identify roles where international candidates are actively considered.
Which visa types does UT Southwestern Medical Center use for Medical Doctor roles?
UT Southwestern sponsors H-1B visas most commonly for attending physician roles. Australian citizens may qualify for the E-3 visa, and Canadian and Mexican physicians may use TN visa status under the USMCA. Physicians completing training programs may enter on F-1 OPT or CPT before transitioning to a work visa once they receive a full attending offer.
What qualifications does UT Southwestern Medical Center expect from Medical Doctor candidates?
Most Medical Doctor roles require a U.S. medical license in the state of Texas, board certification or active board eligibility, and ECFMG certification for international medical graduates. Academic or research-focused positions may also expect a track record of publications or grant funding. Subspecialty training aligned with the recruiting department's clinical focus is generally expected.
How do I navigate the visa filing timeline when joining UT Southwestern as a Medical Doctor?
Because UT Southwestern is cap-exempt, H-1B petitions can be filed as soon as the offer is finalized and the Labor Condition Application is certified by DOL. Standard USCIS processing runs several months, but premium processing is available if you need an expedited decision. Build at least three to four months into your start date planning to allow for LCA certification and USCIS adjudication.
