Tips for Finding Therapist Jobs at UT Southwestern Medical Center
Align Your Licensure Before Applying
Texas requires state licensure for most Therapist roles, and UT Southwestern will expect you to hold or be eligible for it at hire. Confirm your credential transfer timeline with the Texas State Board before submitting applications.
Target Roles With Specialty Occupation Language
H-1B eligibility hinges on USCIS classifying your Therapist role as a specialty occupation. Look for postings that explicitly require a master's degree or higher in a clinical field, which strengthens the petition significantly.
Clarify OPT and CPT Timelines During Screening
If you're on F-1 OPT, flag your authorization end date early in the hiring process. UT Southwestern's academic medical environment means recruiters are familiar with OPT extensions, but you need to drive that conversation proactively.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Open Therapist Roles
Filter for Therapist openings at UT Southwestern that explicitly support visa sponsorship using Migrate Mate. This saves time by surfacing only roles where international candidates are actively considered, letting you focus your applications strategically.
Prepare Clinical Documentation for Credential Evaluation
If your therapy degree is from outside the U.S., have it evaluated by a NACES-approved agency before the offer stage. UT Southwestern's credentialing process will require this, and delays here can push back your start date and H-1B filing window.
Understand the H-1B Cap and Filing Cycle
USCIS opens H-1B registrations in March for an October 1 start date. If your offer is extended outside that window, ask UT Southwestern's HR team whether cap-exempt filing applies given the institution's academic affiliation, as this can bypass the annual lottery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does UT Southwestern Medical Center sponsor H-1B visas for Therapists?
Yes, UT Southwestern Medical Center sponsors H-1B visas for Therapist roles. As an academic medical center, it has an established process for international hires and works with immigration counsel to file petitions. Because UT Southwestern has a teaching and research mission, it may also qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filings, which can allow sponsorship outside the standard annual lottery cycle.
How do I apply for Therapist jobs at UT Southwestern Medical Center?
Applications go through UT Southwestern's careers portal, where Therapist openings are listed by department and clinical area. You can also browse verified sponsoring roles on Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for positions open to international candidates. Tailor your application to the clinical specialty listed, and confirm with the recruiter early in the process that visa sponsorship is available for your target role.
Which visa types are commonly used for Therapist roles at UT Southwestern Medical Center?
UT Southwestern sponsors H-1B, E-3 visa, TN visa, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT visas for Therapist positions. H-1B is the most common path for full-time hires. E-3 visa is available exclusively to Australian citizens. TN visa applies to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying therapy occupations under the USMCA. F-1 OPT and CPT are used for students completing clinical placements or early-career roles.
What qualifications are expected for Therapist roles at UT Southwestern Medical Center?
Most Therapist roles require at minimum a master's degree in a relevant clinical discipline such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, or mental health counseling. Texas state licensure or eligibility for licensure is typically required at the point of hire. Specialized clinical experience in a hospital or academic medical setting is preferred, and some senior roles require board certification in a subspecialty.
How do I navigate the sponsorship timeline for a Therapist position at UT Southwestern Medical Center?
The timeline depends on your visa type and current status. For H-1B, USCIS registration opens in March and the earliest work start date is October 1, so offers made in spring align best with the cap cycle. If you're on OPT, your authorization end date drives urgency. Coordinate with UT Southwestern's HR team and your immigration attorney early to avoid gaps in work authorization between credential verification, licensure, and petition filing.
