Verify Your Licensure Before Applying
New York State requires a full LCSW, LMHC, or licensed psychologist credential for most Northwell Therapist roles. Confirm your license is active and transferable before submitting applications, since unlicensed candidates rarely advance to sponsorship conversations.
Target Northwell's High-Need Outpatient Sites
Northwell operates outpatient behavioral health clinics across Long Island, Westchester, and New York City with recurring Therapist openings. These sites file for sponsorship more regularly than inpatient units, making them stronger targets for visa-dependent candidates.
Request Sponsorship Clarity at the Offer Stage
Ask the recruiter directly whether the specific role is approved for H-1B or Green Card sponsorship before accepting. Northwell's sponsorship decisions are made at the department level, so eligibility varies by program even within the same job title.
Understand the PERM Timeline for EB-2 and EB-3
If Northwell offers Green Card sponsorship through PERM, DOL labor certification alone can take 12 to 18 months. Factor this into your H-1B status timeline so your work authorization doesn't lapse while the immigrant petition is pending.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Verified Sponsoring Roles
Not every Northwell Therapist posting is open to visa sponsorship. Use Migrate Mate to browse verified Therapist openings at Northwell filtered by visa type, so you apply only to roles where sponsorship is confirmed rather than assumed.
Align Your Specialty to Northwell's Service Lines
Northwell's behavioral health division actively recruits Therapists with experience in trauma, pediatrics, and substance use treatment. Tailoring your resume and cover letter to one of these service lines improves your odds of clearing initial screening for sponsorship-eligible positions.

Find Therapist at Northwell Health JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Northwell Health sponsor H-1B visas for Therapists?
Yes, Northwell Health sponsors H-1B visas for Therapist roles, though eligibility depends on the specific position and department. Clinical roles in behavioral health, outpatient therapy, and community mental health are among the functions where sponsorship has been supported. You should confirm sponsorship availability directly with the recruiter once you reach the offer stage, since not every posting carries that option.
How do I apply for Therapist jobs at Northwell Health?
Applications go through Northwell's careers portal at northwell.edu/careers. Search by job title and filter for behavioral health or mental health roles. You can also browse verified Therapist openings at Northwell that are open to visa sponsorship through Migrate Mate, which filters listings by visa type so you're not applying blind to roles that won't sponsor international candidates.
Which visa types does Northwell Health commonly use for Therapist roles?
Northwell sponsors H-1B visas as the primary nonimmigrant work authorization for Therapists. The organization also supports TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals who qualify under USMCA, F-1 OPT for recent graduates in clinical programs, and immigrant pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM for longer-term hires in hard-to-fill behavioral health positions.
What qualifications does Northwell Health expect for Therapist positions?
Most Northwell Therapist roles require a master's degree in social work, counseling, or a related clinical field, plus active New York State licensure such as LCSW or LMHC. Postdoctoral candidates may qualify for psychology-specific roles. Practical experience in trauma-informed care, pediatrics, or substance use treatment strengthens your application considerably, as Northwell's behavioral health division actively recruits in these specialties.
How do I time my application around my visa status?
If you're on F-1 OPT, apply at least three to four months before your OPT end date to give Northwell time to prepare an H-1B cap filing for the April lottery. If you're between jobs on a 60-day grace period, prioritize roles already posted as sponsorship-eligible and communicate your timeline upfront. USCIS H-1B cap filings open in March each year for an October 1 start date.
