COVID-19 Vaccination
Adventist HealthCare strongly recommends all applicants to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before commencing employment. Applicants may be required to furnish proof of vaccination.
TOBACCO AND DRUG STATEMENT
Tobacco use is a well-recognized preventable cause of death in the United States and an important public health issue. In order to promote and maintain a healthy work environment, Adventist HealthCare will not hire applicants for employment who either state that they are nicotine users or who test positive for nicotine and drug use.
While some jurisdictions, including Maryland, permit the use of marijuana for medical purposes, marijuana continues to be classified as an illegal drug under the federal Controlled Substances Act. As a result, medical marijuana use will not be accepted as a valid explanation for a positive drug test result.
Adventist HealthCare will withdraw offers of employment to applicants who test positive for Cotinine (nicotine) and marijuana. Those testing positive are given the opportunity to re-apply in 90 days, if they can truthfully attest that they have not used any nicotine products in the past ninety (90) days and successfully pass follow-up testing. ("Nicotine products" include, but are not limited to: cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes, vaping products, hookah, and nicotine replacement products (e.g., nicotine gum, nicotine patches, nicotine lozenges, etc.).

Tips for Finding Therapist Jobs at Adventist HealthCare
Verify Your Licensure Transfers Across State Lines
Maryland and D.C. have separate licensure boards, and Adventist HealthCare operates across both jurisdictions. Confirm your LCSW, LCPC, or equivalent credential is active in the state where the specific role is posted before you apply.
Target Roles in Behavioral Health Specifically
Adventist HealthCare's behavioral health division, including Shady Grove Medical Center and its outpatient network, tends to hire therapists with documented specializations. Positions in inpatient psychiatry or substance use treatment often move faster through the sponsorship pipeline than general outpatient roles.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Confirmed Sponsoring Openings
Not every Adventist HealthCare posting explicitly flags visa sponsorship. Use Migrate Mate to browse verified Therapist openings filtered by sponsorship type, so you're only spending time on roles where H-1B or TN support is confirmed.
Understand How TN Status Works for Therapists
Canadian and Mexican nationals can pursue TN status under the Social Worker category, which covers licensed clinical therapists. Unlike H-1B, TN has no lottery and can be obtained at the border or a port of entry, making the timeline significantly shorter.
Align Your Application Timing With H-1B Cap Deadlines
If you need H-1B sponsorship and aren't already cap-exempt, your start date must align with the October 1 fiscal year. Talk to Adventist HealthCare's HR team early about whether they can accommodate a conditional offer tied to lottery selection in March.
Prepare a Credential Evaluation Before Interviews
If your graduate degree in counseling or social work was completed outside the U.S., obtain a foreign credential evaluation from a NACES-approved organization before your first interview. Adventist HealthCare's credentialing team will require it before initiating any USCIS petition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Adventist HealthCare sponsor H-1B visas for Therapists?
Yes, Adventist HealthCare has sponsored H-1B visas for Therapist roles. Licensed clinical positions in behavioral health generally qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS standards because they require a specific graduate-level degree. Your role title, degree field, and state licensure all factor into whether USCIS will approve the petition, so align all three before your employer files.
How do I apply for Therapist jobs at Adventist HealthCare?
Applications go through Adventist HealthCare's careers portal at careers.adventisthealthcare.com. Filter by department, specifically Behavioral Health or Mental Health Services, to surface the most relevant openings. You can also browse verified Therapist openings at Adventist HealthCare with confirmed visa sponsorship through Migrate Mate, which filters postings by visa type so you're not applying blind.
Which visa types are commonly used for Therapist roles at Adventist HealthCare?
H-1B is the most common pathway for international therapists at Adventist HealthCare. TN status is available for Canadian and Mexican nationals who hold the equivalent of a U.S. master's degree in social work or counseling. F-1 OPT and CPT are also supported, which makes the organization a viable option for international students completing clinical practicums or post-graduation work authorization.
What qualifications does Adventist HealthCare expect for Therapist roles?
Most Therapist openings require a master's degree in social work, counseling, psychology, or a related clinical field, plus an active state license such as LCSW, LCPC, or LMFT in Maryland or D.C. Roles in inpatient settings often require prior hospital or crisis experience. Foreign-trained applicants need a credential evaluation confirming their degree is equivalent to a U.S. graduate degree before Adventist HealthCare can begin a visa petition.
How do I plan my timeline if I need H-1B sponsorship for a Therapist job?
USCIS opens H-1B registration each March for an October 1 start date. If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your OPT expiration date and whether you qualify for the 24-month STEM extension, which doesn't apply to most therapy fields. Cap-gap protection covers you if your OPT expires between April and September while your H-1B is pending. Build at least six months of lead time into conversations with Adventist HealthCare's HR team.
