Align your specialty training with open divisions
Mayo Clinic recruits Medical Doctors into specific clinical departments, not as a general pool. Research which specialties have active openings before applying, since sponsorship decisions are tied to departmental need and budget cycles.
Obtain ECFMG certification before your first interview
International medical graduates must hold valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certification to practice in the U.S. Mayo Clinic will expect this before extending any offer, so have it in hand ahead of your application.
Understand how J-1 waiver status affects your timeline
If you completed a J-1 residency or fellowship, you face a two-year home residency requirement before H-1B eligibility. Identify your waiver pathway early, since Mayo Clinic's sponsorship process cannot begin until DOL clears your status.
Target Mayo Clinic's GME programs as an entry point
Many physicians who ultimately receive Mayo Clinic sponsorship first enter through Graduate Medical Education programs on J-1 or F-1 CPT or OPT. Completing training within the system significantly improves your path to a sponsored attending position.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Medical Doctor roles by visa type
Sponsorship eligibility varies by role and site within Mayo Clinic's network. Use Migrate Mate to browse open Medical Doctor positions filtered by the visa categories you're eligible for, so you're only targeting roles where sponsorship is confirmed.
Request a USCIS premium processing timeline from HR
H-1B processing under standard timelines can run several months. When negotiating your start date, ask Mayo Clinic's immigration team directly whether premium processing is available for your petition to avoid gaps in your work authorization.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Mayo Clinic sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Doctors?
Yes, Mayo Clinic sponsors H-1B visas for Medical Doctors in qualifying clinical and academic roles. Sponsorship is managed through Mayo Clinic's internal immigration team in coordination with outside counsel. Eligibility depends on your specialty, the specific position, and whether you have any prior visa status obligations such as a J-1 visa two-year home residency requirement.
How do I apply for Medical Doctor jobs at Mayo Clinic?
Applications go through Mayo Clinic's careers portal, where positions are listed by department and location. You can also browse Medical Doctor roles at Mayo Clinic that confirm visa sponsorship through Migrate Mate, which filters listings by the visa types you're eligible for. Submitting through the official portal is required regardless of where you discover the role.
Which visa types does Mayo Clinic commonly use for Medical Doctor roles?
Mayo Clinic sponsors Medical Doctors across several visa categories, including H-1B, J-1, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican physicians in qualifying specialties, and the E-3 visa for Australian citizens. For physicians on the permanent residence pathway, Mayo Clinic also supports EB-2 and EB-3 PERM-based Green Card petitions through the Department of Labor's labor certification process.
What qualifications does Mayo Clinic expect from international Medical Doctor applicants?
International medical graduates are expected to hold a medical degree recognized by ECFMG, have completed U.S.-accredited residency or fellowship training in their specialty, and hold or be eligible for medical licensure in the state where they'll practice. Board certification or eligibility in your specialty is standard. Research or academic medicine backgrounds carry additional weight for roles within Mayo's education and research programs.
How do I plan my timeline if I'm applying for a sponsored Medical Doctor position at Mayo Clinic?
Factor in ECFMG certification, any J-1 waiver processing through DOL or a state health agency if applicable, and USCIS H-1B adjudication timelines before your target start date. Cap-exempt institutions like Mayo Clinic can file H-1B petitions at any time of year, which removes lottery risk, but standard USCIS processing still runs several months unless premium processing is requested.
