Verify Your ECFMG Certification Before Applying
Mayo Clinic requires ECFMG certification for international medical graduates before extending any offer. Confirm your certification is current and your medical school appears on the ECFMG-recognized list before submitting your application to avoid delays at the offer stage.
Target Mayo Sites With Active Hospitalist Openings
Mayo operates across Rochester, Phoenix, and Jacksonville, and Hospitalist demand varies by campus. Browse current openings on Migrate Mate to identify which sites are actively hiring, then tailor your outreach to those specific locations rather than applying broadly.
Understand Which Visa Mayo Files for Hospitalists
Mayo sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, and J-1 visas for clinical roles, and the right category depends on your nationality and training path. Physicians completing U.S. residency on a J-1 may need a waiver or the 212(e) two-year home residency requirement resolved before Mayo can proceed with H-1B sponsorship.
Align Your Application Timing With H-1B Cap Dates
If you need a cap-subject H-1B, USCIS registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. Coordinate your Mayo offer timeline accordingly, since clinical onboarding processes and credentialing at an academic medical system can take 90 to 120 days on their own.
Prepare Board Certification Evidence Early in the Process
Mayo's Hospitalist roles require or strongly prefer ABIM board certification or active board eligibility. Gather your exam scores, training completion letters, and state licensure documents before your first interview, since credentialing reviews at Mayo run parallel to the visa sponsorship process, not after it.
Ask Specifically About PERM and Green Card Timelines
Mayo supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for qualifying Hospitalist staff. During the offer negotiation, ask the hiring team whether PERM labor certification filing is standard for the role and what the typical employer-initiated timeline looks like after your start date.

Find Hospitalist at Mayo Clinic JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Mayo Clinic sponsor H-1B visas for Hospitalists?
Yes, Mayo Clinic sponsors H-1B visas for Hospitalist positions. Because Mayo is a large academic medical institution, it qualifies as a cap-exempt employer through its research and teaching affiliations, which means it can file H-1B petitions with USCIS outside the annual lottery window. This is a significant advantage for physicians who missed the cap or need to start sooner than October 1.
How do I apply for Hospitalist jobs at Mayo Clinic?
Applications go through Mayo Clinic's career portal, where Hospitalist openings are listed by site and subspecialty. Before applying, confirm your ECFMG certification, state licensure status, and board certification or eligibility. You can also browse currently open Hospitalist roles at Mayo Clinic filtered by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate to find postings that match your situation before submitting a formal application.
Which visa types does Mayo Clinic commonly use for Hospitalist roles?
Mayo Clinic sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, J-1, F-1 OPT, and EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card pathways for clinical roles including Hospitalists. Australian physicians typically pursue the E-3, Canadian and Mexican physicians often use TN status, and J-1 waiver holders transitioning out of residency programs typically convert to H-1B. The appropriate category depends on your nationality, training history, and current immigration status.
What qualifications does Mayo Clinic expect for Hospitalist candidates needing sponsorship?
Mayo requires an MD or DO from an ECFMG-recognized institution for international graduates, completion of a U.S.-accredited internal medicine residency, and ABIM board certification or active board eligibility. State licensure in the location of the position is required before an offer becomes final. Candidates with fellowship training in a hospital medicine subspecialty or prior academic medical center experience are generally more competitive for sponsored roles.
How long does the visa sponsorship process typically take for a Hospitalist offer at Mayo Clinic?
From accepted offer to start date, the combined credentialing and visa process at Mayo typically runs three to six months. H-1B premium processing through USCIS can reduce the petition adjudication window to 15 business days, but medical staff credentialing, DEA registration, and state licensing run on separate timelines that cannot be expedited. Building at least four months into your planning is practical for most sponsorship scenarios.
