Verify your medical credentials meet Colorado requirements
Colorado requires ECFMG certification, a valid medical license, and completion of a U.S. residency or fellowship. Confirm your credentials are fully verified before applying, since the university's credentialing office reviews these independently of HR.
Target departments with recurring physician recruitment cycles
University of Colorado's academic medical center consistently recruits across specialties like internal medicine, psychiatry, and surgery. Applying to departments with active clinical expansion gives you better odds than responding to one-off postings in saturated fields.
Understand how J-1 waiver status affects H-1B eligibility
Many international medical graduates arrive on J-1 exchange visitor visas subject to the two-year home residency requirement. If you completed a J-1 waiver through Conrad 30 or a federal agency, confirm your waiver obligations are fully cleared before the university files an H-1B petition.
Ask the department about PERM timing during contract negotiations
For physicians pursuing permanent residence through EB-2 or EB-3, PERM labor certification can take a year or more before USCIS even sees the I-140. Raise the green card pathway question during offer negotiations, not after you've signed.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open Medical Doctor roles at University of Colorado
Physician openings at large academic institutions move quickly and don't always stay on public boards long. Search Migrate Mate to find current Medical Doctor positions at University of Colorado filtered by visa sponsorship, so you're applying to roles where sponsorship is confirmed.
Align your H-1B start date with the academic hiring calendar
University of Colorado often structures physician appointments around academic year cycles. If you're filing a cap-subject H-1B, coordinate your October 1 start date with the department's anticipated onboarding window to avoid a gap in clinical privileges or hospital credentialing.

Find Medical Doctor at University of Colorado JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Colorado sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Doctors?
Yes. University of Colorado sponsors H-1B visas for Medical Doctors, and as a large academic medical institution it qualifies as a cap-exempt employer, meaning it can file H-1B petitions at any time of year without being subject to the annual lottery. This is a significant advantage for international physicians who missed the cap or need to start quickly after completing training.
Which visa types are commonly used for Medical Doctor roles at University of Colorado?
H-1B is the most common work visa for physician roles at University of Colorado, but the institution also sponsors J-1 visas for residents and fellows in accredited training programs, TN status for Canadian and Mexican physicians in qualifying specialty roles, and supports EB-2 and EB-3 green card petitions for physicians moving toward permanent residence. F-1 OPT is generally not applicable for licensed attending physicians.
What qualifications and experience are expected for Medical Doctor roles at University of Colorado?
Most attending physician positions require a valid Colorado medical license, board certification or active board eligibility in the relevant specialty, ECFMG certification for international medical graduates, and completion of an accredited U.S. residency program. Faculty-track roles at the university's academic medical center often expect a research background, grant experience, or interest in medical education alongside clinical responsibilities.
How do I apply for Medical Doctor jobs at University of Colorado?
You can search and apply for Medical Doctor positions through University of Colorado's careers portal, or use Migrate Mate to browse current openings filtered specifically by visa sponsorship. When applying, tailor your CV to highlight specialty training, board status, and any prior academic or research work, since the university's medical departments value both clinical and scholarly experience in physician candidates.
How do I plan my timeline if I need University of Colorado to sponsor my visa for a Medical Doctor role?
Timeline depends heavily on your current status. If you need an H-1B transfer from another employer, the university can file immediately given its cap-exempt status and processing takes roughly three to six months with standard USCIS processing, or two to three weeks with premium processing. If you're starting a PERM-based green card process, build in at least 12 to 24 months before priority date movement matters. Raise sponsorship intentions with the hiring department early so their legal team can sequence filings correctly.
