University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus
Department: Otolaryngology
Job Title: Research Services Laboratory Science Entry Professional
Position #: 00846266–39362
Job Summary:
The lab of Dr. Sarah Clark, Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, is seeking a highly motivated Professional Research Assistant for a part-time position on the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO. This position will be shared between Dr. Clark and Dr. Marika Orlov, an Instructor in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Division working in Dr. Clark’s lab.
The Clark lab investigates host-pathogen interactions with a focus on innate immune responses to bacteria in the respiratory tract. We use both tissue culture and in vivo infection models to explore the impact of respiratory tract commensal and pathogenic bacteria on susceptibility to inflammation and secondary infection. Current projects are focused on how specific respiratory tract commensal bacteria improve defense against lung infection, and how viral co-infection causes long-term perturbations in immune defense to bacterial infections in the middle ear (otitis media).
Dr. Orlov is a new Instructor whose research focuses on how antibiotics alter the gut microbiome, ultimately impairing defense against subsequent lung infections. Dr. Orlov is currently investigating dietary modifications as an intervention to improve lung infection defense after antibiotic treatment.
The PRA will be responsible for planning and executing experiments under the direction of Dr. Clark and Dr. Orlov. The individual hired for this position will be expected to perform experiments, analyze and organize their data, and perform laboratory administrative duties. Training will be offered for any new or unfamiliar techniques by Dr. Orlov and other lab personnel upon starting the position.
Key Responsibilities:
- Handling of microbial cultures and tissue cultures with BSL2 level precautions
- Preparation of bacterial cultures for in vitro and in vivo infection assays
- Perform in vivo infection experiments including injections, infection monitoring, and tissue processing
- Perform in vitro infection experiments with human epithelial cell cultures
- Perform flow cytometry experiments
- Data analysis and maintenance of records in laboratory notebook and storage on OneDrive
Work Location:
Onsite – this role is expected to work onsite in Aurora, CO.
