The Urs and Kopinke Labs at the University of Florida are recruiting an outstanding postdoctoral fellow to join an exciting collaborative project at the intersection of neuroscience, metabolism, behavior, and skeletal muscle biology. Our labs are investigating a fundamental and largely unexplored question: How do pharmacological signals acting in the brain influence both behavior and peripheral tissue function?
The project will investigate how GLP-1 receptor signaling and central dopamine circuits regulate cognition, motivated behaviors, skeletal muscle function, and the development of intramuscular adipose tissue (IMAT). By combining expertise from the Urs Lab in dopamine neurobiology, neural circuits, behavior, and fiber photometry with the Kopinke Lab’s expertise in skeletal muscle regeneration, stromal cell biology, IMAT, and tissue physiology, the fellow will have the opportunity to develop a truly interdisciplinary research program spanning the brain-to-muscle axis.
The successful candidate will design and lead experiments manipulating central dopamine circuits and GLP-1 signaling, analyze behavioral and fiber photometry data, and determine how these neural manipulations influence skeletal muscle physiology and pathology. Approaches will include neural circuit manipulation, behavioral assays, fiber photometry, muscle injury models, quantitative histology, and muscle functional measurements.
This project builds on recent discoveries from our laboratories linking GLP-1 receptor agonists to changes in dopamine dynamics, motivated behavior, and skeletal muscle biology and provides numerous opportunities to develop new mechanistic directions (Biorxiv: https://doi.org/10.64898/2026.06.16.732451). We are particularly interested in candidates who want to bridge traditionally separate fields and develop an independent scientific niche at the intersection of neuroscience and peripheral tissue biology.
The fellow will be encouraged to drive the scientific direction of the project, develop new collaborations, publish high-impact work, present at national and international conferences, and participate actively in fellowship and grant writing.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in neuroscience, muscle biology, or other related fields and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, organizational skills, strong work ethics, and motivational drive, the ability to design and carry out research independently, and evidence of sufficient research experiences (e.g. publication record).
