PRIMARY FUNCTION: The position is responsible for listening to, understanding, interpreting, and translating spoken or written Spanish. The position helps and supports staff on school functions and school-based family involvement in programs, activities, and events. Provides simultaneous interpretation for the effectiveness of school operations and school-to-home partnerships.

Education REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience

Required:

• High School Diploma or GED

Preferred:

• Oral proficiency level of Intermediate High or higher on the ACTFL OPI
• Written proficiency of Intermediate High or higher on the ACTFL WPT.

Licenses, Certifications, and other Requirements

Required:

• Must have reliable transportation to travel within the district.
• Occasional evening or weekend commitments to meet program needs. Office-based with regular travel to program sites and community events.
• SCCPSS will pay for a University of GA online professional interpreter in education certificate.
• 3-year commitment to the bilingual liaison position

Experience, Skill, and Certification REQUIREMENTS:

• Native fluent Spanish speaker with English proficiency or three years of Spanish classes.
• Ability to provide simultaneous interpretation support services.
• Available during school hours and sometimes evenings and/or weekends.
• Understanding of the needs of the Limited English Proficient (LEP) community.
• Ability to speak, read and write fluently in Spanish and English (School Setting, Board Meetings, Town Hall meetings, public settings)
• Strong interpersonal communication skills – the ability to work well with a diverse culture and population.
• Ability to sustain communication and support students, parents, teachers, and school staff.

Preferred:

Duties and Responsibilities

• Facilitates accurate and effective communication between school staff and Spanish-speaking families.
• Oral and written translation from Spanish to English and from English to Spanish.
• Interprets orally from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English during parent-teacher conferences, family engagement events, public meetings, telephone calls, testing, information gathering from other school districts, emergency situations, etc.
• Provides interpretation support for limited English proficient parents and families at school- and district-related meetings/events, training, and events.
• Skill in translating spoken words from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English at a normal speaking rate.
• Provides translations from English to Spanish for such purposes as notification regarding school activities, student progress, disciplinary actions, etc.
• The employee is responsible for written translation from Spanish to English for such purposes as translation of school records, medical records, notes from parents, etc.
• Collaborates with staff from other programs and departments to ensure that the needs of limited English proficient and immigrant parents are supported.
• Maintains confidentiality in all areas and maintains appropriate professional boundaries.
• Attends family school events, activities, and meetings to act as an official interpreter to facilitate engagement and discussions.
• Translates documents and materials for Spanish-speaking families.
• Assists Spanish-speaking students and their families with the school enrollment process or any other needs.
• Assists school personnel and Spanish-speaking parents and students to communicate more effectively.
• Maintains and submits accurate and timely reports and documentation as required.
• Assists with proofreading translated documents from English to Spanish and in the coordination of internal and external resources and support for Limited English Proficient families.
• Facilitates interpretation in one-on-one or group settings.
• Ability to be self-directed, and to work independently and with teams.
• Excellent time management, recordkeeping, and organizational skills.
• Required to have prompt, regular attendance in-person and be available to work on-site, in-person as needed.
• Assisting with the initialization, maintenance, and organization of student ESOL files, and/or permanent record folders.
• Inputting data related to English language proficiency assessments, progress reports, and attendance into district data management systems.
• Performs other duties related to interpreting and translating as assigned.
• Perform other position-related duties as assigned by the ESOL Director.

Work Environment

Employees in this classification are normally exposed to a typical office environment. The employee has some control over the length of time sitting, standing, or ambulating. There are occasions that require the lifting or pulling of equipment or supplies, as well as bending, stooping, or stretching. There is frequent use of computers, telephones, and other standard office equipment, which includes reading, listening, writing, or speaking. There are few exceptional physical or sensory demands.
