Verify Your ECFMG Certification Before Applying
USF's physician roles require ECFMG certification for international medical graduates before any visa petition moves forward. Confirm your certification is active and your medical school is listed in the FAIMER directory well before you submit applications.
Target Departments With Teaching Appointments
USF often structures physician hires as faculty appointments in its Morsani College of Medicine. Roles with an academic title carry a stronger J-1 waiver pathway and give the employer a clearer internal process for initiating H-1B sponsorship than purely clinical positions.
Understand the J-1 Waiver Timeline Early
If you completed residency or fellowship on a J-1 visa, the two-year home residency requirement applies. USF can sponsor a Conrad 30 or federal agency waiver, but USCIS and the State Department review takes months, so start the waiver process before negotiating your start date.
Confirm the LCA Covers Your Practice Location
USF physicians often rotate across multiple Tampa Bay campuses and affiliated hospitals. The DOL-certified Labor Condition Application must list each worksite where you'll practice. Ask your hiring department to confirm all locations are covered before your I-129 is filed.
Use Migrate Mate to Identify Open Physician Roles
Not all USF physician postings appear on general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to filter Medical Doctor openings at USF by visa sponsorship type, so you can focus on roles where H-1B or EB-2 sponsorship is already confirmed rather than guessing from the job description.
Request a PERM Timeline Discussion During Offer Negotiations
If your goal is permanent residence, ask USF's HR or immigration counsel during the offer stage whether the role qualifies for EB-2 national interest waiver or requires full PERM labor certification. PERM can take over a year, and starting that conversation early shapes your long-term status planning.

Find Medical Doctor at University of South Florida JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of South Florida sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Doctors?
Yes, USF sponsors H-1B visas for Medical Doctor roles, particularly for positions tied to its academic medical system. Physician hires are typically structured as faculty or clinical faculty appointments, which strengthens the specialty occupation basis for the H-1B petition. International medical graduates will need valid ECFMG certification and a completed residency or fellowship before USF initiates the USCIS filing.
How do I apply for Medical Doctor jobs at University of South Florida?
Start by identifying open physician roles through USF Health's careers portal or Migrate Mate, which filters listings by visa sponsorship type. Applications generally require a curriculum vitae, medical school transcripts, USMLE scores, ECFMG certification documentation, and references from residency or fellowship programs. Department leads and faculty hiring committees typically conduct initial screening before HR formally engages on visa sponsorship logistics.
Which visa types does University of South Florida commonly use for Medical Doctor roles?
USF uses H-1B most frequently for long-term physician hires, but J-1 exchange visitor status is also common for physicians completing fellowships or research appointments. For permanent positions, USF can sponsor EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card petitions. Foreign-trained physicians who completed U.S. residency on a J-1 may need to resolve their two-year home residency requirement through a Conrad 30 waiver before H-1B sponsorship can begin.
What qualifications does University of South Florida expect for Medical Doctor positions?
USF expects candidates to hold an MD or DO degree, pass all three USMLE steps, and hold or be eligible for Florida medical licensure. ECFMG certification is required for international medical graduates. Most posted roles specify board certification or eligibility in a relevant specialty. Academic roles at Morsani College of Medicine may also require demonstrated research output or a commitment to medical education alongside clinical duties.
How do I handle the two-year home residency rule when targeting USF physician jobs?
If your J-1 exchange visitor visa carried a two-year home residency requirement, you cannot change to H-1B status until that obligation is fulfilled or waived. USF can support a Conrad 30 waiver application if the role involves practicing in a designated shortage area. The State Department and USCIS both review waiver applications, and the full process typically takes six to twelve months, so engaging USF's immigration office before signing an offer letter is essential.
