Verify your medical credentials match Minnesota requirements
Minnesota requires ECFMG certification for international medical graduates before any clinical role. Confirm your USMLE steps and postgraduate training meet both state licensing board standards and the university's credentialing committee before applying.
Target department-level hiring contacts directly
University of Minnesota Medical Doctor roles are often filled through departmental searches in areas like internal medicine, surgery, and family medicine. Reaching out to division chiefs or department administrators alongside your formal application increases your visibility before a search closes.
Understand how J-1 waiver status affects your H-1B timeline
Many international physicians arrive on J-1 research or clinical exchange visas subject to the two-year home residency requirement. If you need a Conrad 30 or federal agency waiver, factor in the waiver processing period when negotiating your start date with the university.
Ask hiring managers about E-3 eligibility before accepting
Australian physicians are often unaware the E-3 visa is faster and simpler for the university to file than the H-1B. If you hold Australian citizenship, raise this explicitly during offer negotiations so the international office can assess it before initiating the H-1B process.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open Medical Doctor roles at the university
University of Minnesota posts Medical Doctor positions across multiple departments and hiring cycles. Browse current openings filtered by visa sponsorship availability on Migrate Mate so you can prioritize applications to roles already aligned with your authorization needs.
Confirm PERM labor certification timing with HR before signing
If the university agrees to sponsor your Green Card through EB-2 or EB-3, ask HR whether PERM filing is initiated at hire or after a tenure period. DOL processing for PERM currently runs several months, so early alignment prevents delays in your permanent residence timeline.
