Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Professor Jobs at University of Minnesota Jobs
Align your credentials with U.S. academic standards
University of Minnesota hiring committees evaluate international degrees closely. If your terminal degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization before applying so your qualifications translate clearly to their search committees.
Target departments with active research grants
Grant-funded departments at the University of Minnesota are more likely to move quickly on faculty hires and carry budget for visa filing costs. Search for departments with active NIH, NSF, or USDA funding in your field when identifying where to focus your applications.
Understand the PERM timeline for tenure-track offers
If you're targeting a tenure-track position, the university's path to permanent residence typically involves PERM labor certification through DOL. That process can take 18 months or longer, so raising it in negotiations gives both sides realistic expectations from the start.
Clarify OPT or CPT authorization before your start date
If you're finishing a U.S. doctorate and plan to start at the University of Minnesota before your H-1B or other visa is approved, confirm with your current institution's DSO that your F-1 OPT covers the gap. Cap-exempt H-1B filing through a university can run concurrently.
Use Migrate Mate to find Professor openings with confirmed sponsorship
Not every Professor listing at the University of Minnesota specifies visa sponsorship upfront. Use Migrate Mate to filter for roles where sponsorship is confirmed, so you spend your time on applications that are actually accessible to international candidates.
Negotiate visa filing costs into your offer terms
University of Minnesota covers most employer-side filing fees, but premium USCIS processing is not always standard. If your start date is time-sensitive due to visa expiry or a teaching term, ask during the offer stage whether premium processing is available for your petition.

Find Professor at University of Minnesota JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Minnesota sponsor H-1B visas for Professors?
Yes. University of Minnesota is a cap-exempt H-1B employer, meaning it can file H-1B petitions at any time of year without being subject to the annual lottery. This is a meaningful advantage for international faculty candidates, since cap-exempt petitions can be filed and adjudicated year-round through USCIS, aligning more easily with academic hiring cycles.
Which visa types are commonly used for Professor roles at University of Minnesota?
Professor roles at the University of Minnesota are commonly filled using H-1B, J-1, TN, and E-3 visas depending on the candidate's nationality and situation. The university also supports F-1 OPT and CPT for doctoral candidates transitioning to faculty roles, and sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways for tenure-track hires pursuing permanent residence.
What qualifications or experience are expected for Professor positions at University of Minnesota?
Most Professor openings at the University of Minnesota require a terminal degree in the relevant field, typically a Ph.D. or equivalent, along with a demonstrated research or teaching record appropriate to the rank. Tenure-track roles generally expect evidence of an independent research agenda, prior publications, and the potential to secure external funding. Clinical and teaching-focused appointments may weight classroom experience more heavily.
How do I apply for Professor jobs at University of Minnesota?
Applications are submitted through the University of Minnesota's internal jobs portal, where faculty positions are listed by department. Each posting specifies required materials, which typically include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research and teaching statements, and reference contacts. International candidates can use Migrate Mate to identify Professor openings at the University of Minnesota that include confirmed visa sponsorship before starting the application process.
How do I plan my timeline around the visa filing process for a Professor offer?
For H-1B petitions, the University of Minnesota can file year-round due to its cap-exempt status, but USCIS standard processing takes several months. J-1 exchange visitor status through the university can sometimes move faster. If you're transitioning from OPT or another status, confirm your authorized end date with the university's International Faculty and Scholar Services office early in the offer stage to avoid gaps.
