Align your CV to U.S. academic standards
U.S. faculty applications require a CV structured around publications, teaching history, grants, and service, not the resume format used in many other countries. MSU hiring committees evaluate research output and disciplinary fit before screening for visa eligibility.
Target departments with active search committees
MSU posts faculty openings through its official careers portal and discipline-specific job boards like HigherEdJobs and the Chronicle of Higher Education. Applying to an active posted search is the standard path to a sponsored offer at a research university.
Understand how the J-1 fits faculty recruitment
MSU regularly uses the J-1 Exchange Visitor program for visiting and postdoctoral faculty. If your role qualifies, confirm whether a two-year home residency requirement applies before accepting, since it affects your ability to later transition to H-1B status.
Ask HR about the H-1B filing timeline at offer stage
MSU's international office handles H-1B petitions internally, but processing starts after a formal offer is accepted. For cap-subject petitions, the April 1 filing window means an offer made in late fall or winter may require you to wait up to six months before authorized work begins.
Prepare PERM documentation early for tenure-track roles
Tenure-track positions at research universities often lead to EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM. DOL requires that the original job posting and recruitment steps are documented precisely, so keep records of your application materials from the moment you apply.
Browse open Professor roles on Migrate Mate
Faculty roles that include visa sponsorship are scattered across department-level postings and hard to filter by sponsorship type. Use Migrate Mate to identify Professor openings at MSU that are actively sponsoring, so you can focus your applications where a pathway exists.

Find Professor at Michigan State University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Michigan State University sponsor H-1B visas for Professors?
Yes, Michigan State University sponsors H-1B visas for Professors and other full-time faculty in specialty occupation roles. MSU's International Studies and Programs office manages the petition process on behalf of the hiring department. Sponsorship is typically initiated after a formal offer is extended, and the university covers filing fees as part of the appointment.
How do I apply for Professor jobs at Michigan State University?
Applications for Professor positions at Michigan State University are submitted through MSU's official careers portal at careers.msu.edu. Each posting specifies required materials, which typically include a cover letter, CV, research statement, teaching philosophy, and reference contact information. You can also browse MSU Professor openings that include visa sponsorship through Migrate Mate to identify active searches before applying directly.
Which visa types are commonly used for Professor roles at Michigan State University?
MSU sponsors several visa categories for faculty depending on the appointment type. The H-1B is the most common for full-time tenure-track and fixed-term Professors. The J-1 Exchange Visitor visa is frequently used for visiting faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and short-term academic appointments. TN status is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying academic roles. For permanent positions, MSU supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process.
What qualifications are expected for Professor roles at Michigan State University?
Most tenure-track Professor positions at MSU require a terminal degree in the relevant field, which is typically a Ph.D. or MFA. Research universities like MSU place significant weight on your publication record, grant funding history, and evidence of teaching effectiveness. For clinical or professional program faculty, relevant industry credentials and licensure may substitute for or complement academic credentials depending on the department.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Professor position at MSU?
Timeline depends on visa type. H-1B processing through USCIS takes roughly three to six months with standard processing, or two to three weeks with premium processing. If your H-1B is cap-subject, the April 1 filing window applies, which can add months to your start date. PERM labor certification for Green Card sponsorship typically takes one to two years before an I-140 petition can be filed with USCIS.
