Tips for Finding Professor Jobs at Emory University
Align your credentials with U.S. academic standards
Emory evaluates faculty candidates on U.S.-equivalent qualifications. If your doctorate or publications are from outside the country, prepare a credential evaluation and a clear record of peer-reviewed output before applying.
Target departments with active faculty searches
Emory's Rollins School of Public Health, School of Medicine, and Goizueta Business School post faculty openings with distinct timelines. Monitoring department-level pages, not just the central jobs portal, surfaces openings earlier.
Understand how J-1 fits into your longer-term plan
Emory frequently places visiting and postdoctoral faculty on J-1 status before transitioning them to H-1B. If you're subject to the two-year home residency requirement, clarify your waiver eligibility before accepting any J-1 offer.
Ask HR specifically about PERM timing for tenure-track roles
Tenure-track Professor offers at Emory often include EB-2 or EB-3 PERM sponsorship, but PERM labor market testing must be completed before your I-140 filing. Confirm whether your offer letter explicitly covers Green Card sponsorship and the projected start date.
Build your visa sponsorship search around verified data
Use Migrate Mate to browse Professor roles at Emory University filtered by visa type, so you can prioritize openings where sponsorship for your specific category, whether H-1B, TN, or F-1 OPT, has already been confirmed.
Prepare for H-1B cap timing if you're not already exempt
Emory is a nonprofit university and qualifies as a cap-exempt employer, meaning H-1B petitions for its faculty can be filed at any time of year without entering the annual lottery. Confirm this status with Emory's Office of International Student and Scholar Services before negotiating a start date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Emory University sponsor H-1B visas for Professors?
Yes. Emory University sponsors H-1B visas for Professor roles. As a nonprofit research university, Emory qualifies as a cap-exempt employer under USCIS rules, which means it can file H-1B petitions year-round without waiting for the annual lottery. This is a significant practical advantage if you're currently on OPT or another expiring status.
How do I apply for Professor jobs at Emory University?
Faculty positions at Emory are posted through the university's central careers portal and through individual school and department pages. Applications typically require a CV, cover letter, research and teaching statements, and a list of references. Tenure-track searches often run on a September to December cycle, so applications submitted after January may be for the following academic year.
Which visa types does Emory University commonly use for Professor roles?
Emory sponsors H-1B and J-1 visas most frequently for faculty, with J-1 Exchange Visitor status often used for visiting professors and postdoctoral scholars. For permanent faculty, Emory supports Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 PERM. TN visa status is available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying disciplines, and F-1 OPT is accepted for candidates completing degrees at U.S. institutions.
What qualifications does Emory University expect for Professor roles?
A terminal degree in your field, typically a Ph.D. or M.D., is the standard requirement for most faculty appointments. Tenure-track positions additionally expect a strong record of peer-reviewed publications, external grant funding, and evidence of teaching effectiveness. Clinical faculty roles, particularly in the School of Medicine, may weigh board certification and patient care experience alongside research output.
How do I find Professor roles at Emory University that include visa sponsorship?
Emory does not always specify visa sponsorship details in individual job postings. Migrate Mate aggregates Professor openings at Emory University with confirmed sponsorship data by visa type, so you can identify roles where your visa category is supported before investing time in the application process. This is especially useful if you're on a status with a strict timeline, like the 60-day OPT grace period.
