Summer Community Advisor (SCA) - Student Worker Position
INTRODUCTION
The Office of Residence Life at the University of Minnesota Crookston is seeking dedicated, responsible, and enthusiastic student leaders to serve as Summer Community Advisors (SCAs). The Summer Community Advisor is a vital peer leader who plays a key role in fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaging living-learning environment within the residence halls. The SCA is responsible for building a positive community, serving as a resource for residents, upholding university policies, promoting the personal and academic growth of students, and providing administrative support for summer camps and conferences. This live-in position requires a significant time commitment.
Student positions are a form of financial support while pursuing an education at the University of Minnesota.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Community Development & Programming
- Develop and maintain a positive, respectful, and inclusive community on an assigned floor or within a designated area.
- Foster a welcoming environment by being visible, approachable, and available to residents and conference guests.
- Build individual relationships with each residential student to understand their needs and connect them with appropriate campus resources.
- Plan, promote, and execute a variety of engaging social, educational, and wellness programs that align with the departmental curriculum and student needs.
- Regularly create and maintain community-building displays, such as bulletin boards and door decorations, with relevant and timely information.
Student Support & Resource Referral
- Serve as a primary resource and peer advisor for residential students on academic, personal, and social matters.
- Mediate roommate conflicts and facilitate discussions to help students develop conflict resolution skills.
- Maintain confidentiality while connecting residential students with campus resources such as the Counseling Center, Student Success Center, Health Services, and Public Safety.
- Recognize and respond to students and conference guests in distress, providing immediate support and reporting concerns to the appropriate professional staff.
On Duty Responsibilities
- Participate in a rotating on-call duty schedule, which includes nights, weekends, and holidays.
- While on duty, coordinate with a duty partner to provide front desk coverage in Centennial Hall from 4:30PM to 6:30PM (Monday through Friday).
- Conduct physical walks of the building to check all entry points, making sure doors are locked, and identify any hazards.
- Physical walks will occur a minimum of three (3) times per night and will be reasonably spaced out.
- Confront and address noise complaints, unauthorized guests, and any behavior violating University policy.
- Carry the duty phone and respond immediately to all calls (lockouts, emergencies).
While on duty:
- Community Advisors of legal age may not consume alcohol or other recreational drugs leading up to or while on duty.
- Community Advisors may not attend class, host a program/event, leave campus, work other on campus jobs, or otherwise be unavailable or unable to respond while on duty.
- Community Advisors may visit dining services, attend on-campus athletic events, and participate in intramural sports, provided they remain available and respond immediately to all calls.
- Act as the initial responder for all crises (fire alarms, medical incidents, mental health concerns), following established emergency protocols.
- Contact Campus Security and the professional staff on call for serious or complex situations.
- Provide active listening and referral to campus resources (Counseling, Health Services) for students in need.
- Accurately and thoroughly complete Incident Reports (IRs) and a duty log for all incidents and activities encountered during the shift before 8AM the next day.
- Communicate all ongoing issues clearly to the next staff member coming on duty.
Camps & Conferences
- Wash and assemble linen bags as needed for each camp or conference group.
- Assist with check-in and check-out of each camp or conference group.
- Provide good customer service for all camps and conferences attendees.
Administrative Duties
- Assist with the opening of the residence halls and semester room changes at the beginning and end of the summer semester.
- Complete all required administrative tasks accurately and on time, including duty logs, incident reports, program proposals, and weekly reports.
- Manage programming budget(s) responsibly.
- Perform check-in/check-out procedures, room condition reports, and assist with key management.
- Attend and actively participate in all mandatory staff meetings, training sessions, and one-on-one meetings with your supervisor.
Other Duties as Assigned
Residential Life reserves the right to change, add or alter expectations of the Community Advisor position. Any changes or additions to expectations will be communicated clearly and in writing before implementation.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Student enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student is required for obtaining and continuing in an on-campus student employment position.
- Must be currently enrolled in 6 or more credits for the upcoming Fall Semester as a student at the University of Minnesota Crookston.
- Must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with the university.
- Must have lived in a university residence hall for at least one full semester prior to the start of employment.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations and a commitment to fostering an inclusive environment.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Must reside in the assigned residence hall room for the entire academic year.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Preference may be given to Fall 2026 Community Advisors.
