Align your credentials with U.S. academic standards
Foreign degree equivalency matters for Professor roles. If your doctorate or terminal degree was earned outside the U.S., get an official credential evaluation from a NACES-approved service before applying, so ODU's hiring committee can assess your qualifications without friction.
Target departments with active faculty searches
ODU posts faculty openings through its HR portal and discipline-specific channels like HigherEdJobs. Focus on departments that have recent or recurring searches, which signals active headcount approval and a hiring committee ready to move through the sponsorship process.
Understand how TN status applies to faculty
If you're a Canadian or Mexican citizen applying for a Professor role, TN status covers university-level teaching and can be obtained at the port of entry without USCIS filing. It's faster than H-1B and doesn't require employer petition approval in advance.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open Professor roles
Faculty job searches at universities can be scattered across multiple portals. Use Migrate Mate to filter Professor openings at ODU by visa sponsorship type, so you're only applying to roles where sponsorship is confirmed rather than assumed.
Ask about PERM sponsorship expectations before signing
For permanent residence via EB-2 or EB-3, ODU must run a DOL PERM labor certification process. Clarify during the offer stage whether the department has a policy on sponsoring Green Card applications and what the expected timeline looks like before you accept.

Find Professor at Old Dominion University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Old Dominion University sponsor H-1B visas for Professors?
Yes, Old Dominion University sponsors H-1B visas for Professor roles. Faculty positions at ODU are typically eligible for H-1B sponsorship because they qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. The university's international faculty support office handles the petition process through USCIS, including filing fees and required documentation.
Which visa types are commonly used for Professor roles at Old Dominion University?
Professor roles at ODU are commonly sponsored through H-1B, TN (for Canadian and Mexican citizens), and F-1 OPT or CPT for doctoral candidates on training authorization. For faculty pursuing permanent residence, ODU also sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways through the DOL PERM process, which is most common for tenure-track appointments.
What qualifications are expected for Professor positions at Old Dominion University?
Most Professor roles at ODU require a terminal degree in the relevant discipline, typically a Ph.D. or equivalent. Departments hiring for tenure-track positions also expect a research agenda, publication record, and evidence of teaching experience. Lecturers or clinical faculty roles may accept a master's degree with significant professional or industry experience in lieu of a doctorate.
How do I apply for Professor jobs at Old Dominion University?
Applications for Professor positions are submitted through ODU's official HR portal, and most postings require a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching philosophy statement, and contact information for academic references. You can also browse open Professor roles at ODU that offer visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate, which filters positions by sponsorship type so you can focus your search.
How do I time my Professor job search to align with H-1B sponsorship at ODU?
If you need H-1B sponsorship, target faculty postings that open in the fall or winter, which positions you to receive an offer before the USCIS H-1B registration window in March. An October 1 start date aligns with the academic year and the H-1B cap timeline. If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your OPT expiration date and STEM extension eligibility before committing to an offer timeline.
