INTRODUCTION
The Department of Art at Smith College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Studio Art at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin July 2026. We seek an artist with an active studio practice in artist’s books and artist’s publications and a strong understanding of contemporary critical issues and histories of art, especially as they concern the expanded field of print media and its capacity for social engagement. Candidates should have a commitment to undergraduate teaching and be prepared to engage actively with diverse students across the liberal arts. MFA or equivalent terminal degree in art or a relevant field is expected by the time of appointment. College-level teaching experience beyond graduate school is required.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Candidates should have a strong foundation in book arts and publication formats, letterpress, and a variety of printmaking processes, including digital and emerging applications. As well, they should have experience with community-facing practices, which might involve interactivity, collectivity, activism, distribution, etc. Teaching responsibilities for this position will regularly include scaffolded courses based on expertise in these areas, plus Drawing I and the Senior Studio capstone, since faculty teach at all levels of the curriculum. Other courses may be taught depending on the candidate’s area(s) of specialization.
The successful candidate will teach two studio courses per semester (four per year) within a department that has majors in studio art, art history, and architecture. Along with teaching and artistic practice, faculty at Smith mentor and advise undergraduates, contribute to departmental and college committees, and may be involved in interdisciplinary and consortial programs. Smith College also offers a generous sabbatical policy, and support for curricular development and practice-based travel.
Additional responsibilities include management of the typography/letterpress studio and shared oversight of other relevant facilities in collaboration with printmaking faculty and department staff. Department facilities are well-equipped for traditional, digital, and experimental production and are in close proximity to the Hillyer Art Library and the Smith College Museum of Art.
Given the cross-disciplinary interests of students and colleagues in the Department of Art, we encourage applicants who bring a conceptually and technically expansive approach to the field and to the studio classroom. Beyond the department, the Book Studies Concentration, the Mortimer Rare Book Collection, the Jandon Center for Community Engagement, and the Botanic Garden are just a few of the potential partners for teaching or practice-based collaboration on campus.
COMPENSATION
In addition to a competitive benefits package, pay for newly-hired assistant professors with a terminal degree beginning the first year of the tenure clock in Fall 2026 is typically between $92,000-96,000. Salary decisions are dependent on several factors, including but not limited to teaching and work experience beyond the terminal degree, as well as market, disciplinary, and internal peer equity factors.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Physician Jobs at University of Rochester Jobs
Verify your credentials meet ECFMG standards
University of Rochester requires ECFMG certification for international medical graduates before any visa sponsorship can begin. Confirm your certification is current and your medical degree has been verified before submitting applications, since incomplete credentials stall the hiring timeline.
Target departments with consistent physician openings
Rochester's School of Medicine and Dentistry and its affiliated Strong Memorial Hospital regularly post positions in primary care, hospital medicine, and specialty departments. Focusing your search on divisions with recurring vacancies improves your chances of landing a role with a sponsorship-ready hiring team.
Understand J-1 waiver implications before accepting offers
Many international physicians enter the U.S. on J-1 exchange visitor visas for residency or fellowship. If you hold a J-1 with a two-year home residency requirement, confirm whether Rochester can support a Conrad 30 or federal agency waiver before you reach the offer stage.
Clarify H-1B or E-3 filing timing with your recruiter
H-1B cap-subject filings must be submitted in April for an October 1 start date. Ask Rochester's HR or immigration counsel early whether your position is cap-exempt through the university's nonprofit status, which would allow filing and starting at any point in the year.
Prepare for PERM if permanent residency is your goal
Physicians pursuing EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship through Rochester will require a PERM labor certification filed with the DOL. Timelines routinely run 12 to 24 months, so raise your long-term immigration goals during salary negotiations rather than after your H-1B is approved.
Browse open physician roles using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter University of Rochester's current physician openings by visa type, so you're only applying to roles where sponsorship aligns with your status. This saves significant time compared to screening job listings manually across multiple hospital and university portals.

Find Physician at University of Rochester JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Rochester sponsor H-1B visas for Physicians?
Yes, University of Rochester sponsors H-1B visas for Physicians. As a nonprofit academic medical institution, Rochester qualifies as a cap-exempt employer under USCIS rules, meaning it can file H-1B petitions at any time of year rather than only during the annual April lottery window. This makes the process significantly more predictable for physician candidates than it would be with a for-profit employer.
How do I apply for Physician jobs at University of Rochester?
You can apply directly through the University of Rochester's careers portal or browse open physician positions filtered by visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate. Applications typically require a CV, medical licenses, ECFMG certification for international medical graduates, and a cover letter. Reaching out to department chiefs or division directors before formally applying can strengthen your candidacy, particularly in competitive specialty areas.
Which visa types does University of Rochester commonly use for Physician roles?
Rochester sponsors several visa categories for Physicians, including H-1B, J-1, E-3 for Australian citizens, and TN for Canadian and Mexican physicians in qualifying specialty categories. For permanent residency, the institution supports EB-2 and EB-3 petitions. The appropriate visa depends on your nationality, training background, and whether you're currently on a J-1 with a two-year home residency requirement.
What qualifications does University of Rochester expect for Physician positions?
Rochester expects candidates to hold an MD or DO from an accredited institution, along with completed residency training in the relevant specialty. International medical graduates must hold valid ECFMG certification. Board certification or active eligibility is generally required, and New York State medical licensure must be obtained prior to starting. Fellowship training is expected for subspecialty roles in departments affiliated with Strong Memorial Hospital.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Physician role at University of Rochester?
For H-1B sponsorship, USCIS standard processing runs three to five months from filing. Because Rochester is cap-exempt, you're not locked into the April filing cycle, so start dates can be planned around your availability and onboarding timeline. J-1 waiver applications, if applicable, typically add three to six months before an H-1B can be filed, so factor that into your planning early in the offer process.
