Credential Your Medical Degree for U.S. Standards
Foreign medical degrees must be evaluated through ECFMG certification before VCU can move forward with sponsorship. Complete USMLE steps and secure ECFMG certification early, since this process takes months and is a hard prerequisite for any physician hire.
Target VCU Departments Recruiting International Fellows
VCU's health sciences schools and VCU Health System actively recruit internationally trained physicians in specialties like internal medicine, psychiatry, and family medicine. Search postings by department and look for roles listed under VCU Health or the School of Medicine specifically.
Understand How J-1 Affects Your H-1B Timeline
Many international physicians complete residency or fellowship on a J-1 visa, which carries a two-year home residency requirement. VCU can sponsor an H-1B waiver through Conrad 30 or federal agency channels, but you need to initiate that process before your J-1 ends.
Browse Open Physician Roles Using Migrate Mate
Filter Migrate Mate's job board by Virginia Commonwealth University and physician role type to surface current openings that are open to visa sponsorship. This saves time compared to sorting through general job boards that don't surface sponsorship eligibility clearly.
Confirm State Licensure Requirements Before Applying
Virginia requires full medical licensure through the Virginia Board of Medicine before you can practice. VCU's HR and legal teams won't initiate I-129 H-1B filing until your Virginia medical license is in hand, so start that application in parallel with your job search.
Clarify the LCA Timeline During Offer Negotiations
Before VCU can file your H-1B petition with USCIS, the institution must first obtain a certified Labor Condition Application from DOL. Ask the hiring department or international HR contact to confirm that process has started as soon as you receive a verbal offer.

Does Virginia Commonwealth University sponsor H-1B visas for Physicians?
Yes, Virginia Commonwealth University sponsors H-1B visas for Physicians. VCU has an established international employment process through its HR and legal teams, covering the full H-1B petition cycle including the Labor Condition Application filed with DOL and the I-129 petition filed with USCIS. Physician roles at VCU Health and the School of Medicine are among the most common positions where sponsorship is offered.
How do I apply for Physician jobs at Virginia Commonwealth University?
Physician roles at VCU are posted through the VCU Careers portal and VCU Health's recruitment site. You can also browse current openings filtered by sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate. Before applying, confirm your ECFMG certification is complete and that you've obtained or are eligible for Virginia medical licensure, as both are typically required before VCU will advance a sponsorship-eligible candidate through the hiring process.
Which visa types does Virginia Commonwealth University use for Physician roles?
VCU sponsors H-1B visas for most permanent physician hires and J-1 visas for residents, fellows, and exchange physicians. For candidates pursuing long-term employment, VCU can also support EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa petitions through the PERM labor certification process. TN status is available for Canadian and Mexican physicians in qualifying specialty roles. The right pathway depends on your current status, degree, and the specific role.
What qualifications does VCU expect for sponsored Physician positions?
VCU expects candidates to hold an MD or DO degree, hold or be eligible for Virginia medical licensure, and have completed residency training in the relevant specialty. ECFMG certification is required for international medical graduates. For academic or research-focused physician roles at VCU's medical school, prior teaching experience or a research track record in your specialty strengthens your application considerably.
How long does the H-1B sponsorship process take at Virginia Commonwealth University?
After VCU extends an offer, the sponsorship process typically runs two to four months for standard H-1B processing. VCU's legal team must first file a Labor Condition Application with DOL, which takes about seven business days, before submitting the I-129 to USCIS. If your start date is urgent, ask HR whether premium processing is available, which reduces USCIS adjudication to roughly 15 business days.
