Frame your credentials for U.S. academic standards
Foreign degrees need to align with U.S. equivalency expectations. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before applying, so your terminal degree clearly maps to the minimum qualifications VCU lists for adjunct faculty positions.
Target departments with recurring adjunct needs
VCU fills adjunct roles on a semester-by-semester basis across health sciences, business, and engineering. Reaching out to department coordinators directly before a semester starts puts you in consideration before postings go live.
Clarify sponsorship scope during the offer conversation
Universities distinguish between sponsoring status maintenance for existing visa holders and filing a new H-1B petition. Ask VCU's HR office specifically whether the role qualifies for cap-exempt H-1B filing, since research institutions can often file year-round without lottery registration.
Understand how F-1 OPT timelines interact with semester contracts
Adjunct contracts are often part-time or term-limited, which can complicate OPT authorization requirements around full-time employment. Confirm with your Designated School Official that the role and weekly hours satisfy USCIS work authorization conditions before accepting.
Use Migrate Mate to find open adjunct roles at VCU
Adjunct postings at large universities rotate frequently and don't always surface on general job boards. Search Migrate Mate to filter VCU adjunct instructor openings by visa sponsorship type so you only apply to roles that match your authorization.
Prepare your PERM documentation early if targeting permanence
If your goal is an EB-2 or EB-3 green card through VCU, the PERM labor certification process requires demonstrated recruitment efforts. Ask HR upfront whether the adjunct role is eligible for permanent sponsorship or whether a full-time faculty position is required.

Find Adjunct Instructor at Virginia Commonwealth University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Virginia Commonwealth University sponsor H-1B visas for Adjunct Instructors?
Yes, VCU sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Adjunct Instructor roles. As a university, VCU qualifies as a cap-exempt H-1B employer, meaning petitions can be filed at any point during the year without going through the annual lottery. The role must meet USCIS specialty occupation criteria, and sponsorship is typically initiated after a formal offer is extended.
How do I apply for Adjunct Instructor jobs at Virginia Commonwealth University?
Applications go through VCU's official HR portal, where individual departments post adjunct openings by semester. You'll submit a CV, cover letter, and evidence of your terminal degree. For visa-sponsored positions, you can browse current openings filtered by sponsorship type on Migrate Mate before applying directly through VCU's system.
Which visa types does VCU commonly use for Adjunct Instructor roles?
VCU sponsors a range of visa types for adjunct faculty, including H-1B, J-1, TN, and F-1 OPT and CPT. J-1 exchange visitor visas are common for short-term or visiting instructors. TN status is available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying professional roles. H-1B is the most common route for longer-term adjunct appointments.
What qualifications does VCU expect for Adjunct Instructor positions?
Most Adjunct Instructor roles at VCU require a master's degree at minimum, with a terminal degree preferred in the relevant discipline. Some departments, particularly in health sciences and professional programs, expect active licensure or industry credentials alongside academic qualifications. Prior teaching experience, even at the graduate assistant level, strengthens your application significantly.
How do I plan my timeline around VCU's adjunct hiring and visa processing?
Adjunct hiring at VCU typically ramps up six to ten weeks before a semester starts. For H-1B sponsorship, USCIS premium processing takes around 15 business days, but the LCA certification through DOL must be completed first and adds one to two weeks. Starting conversations with department contacts and HR well before semester deadlines gives you the best chance of having authorization in place before your start date.
