Align Your Credentials to U.S. Academic Standards
VCU hiring committees evaluate foreign degrees closely. Have your transcripts assessed by a NACES-approved credential evaluation service before applying, so your qualification level maps clearly to U.S. degree equivalencies required for faculty and instructor roles.
Target Departments Hiring in Your Discipline
VCU posts Teaching openings by school and department, not just job type. Search by college, such as the College of Humanities and Sciences or the School of Education, to find roles where your specific subject matter expertise matches the listed requirements.
Understand How VCU Structures Sponsorship by Role Type
Tenure-track faculty positions are more likely to support full Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 PERM, while adjunct or visiting roles typically use H-1B or J-1. Clarify the appointment type early so you know which visa pathway is realistic.
Confirm H-1B Eligibility Before Accepting a Visiting Role
J-1 visiting scholar appointments at VCU may carry a two-year home residency requirement. If you're planning to transition to H-1B status afterward, confirm with VCU's international office whether a waiver will be needed before your start date.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter VCU Teaching Openings by Visa Type
Browse Teaching roles at Virginia Commonwealth University filtered by the visa types you're eligible for on Migrate Mate, so you're only spending time on positions where sponsorship is already confirmed as part of the hiring process.
Request the PERM Timeline Early in Offer Negotiations
If a Teaching offer includes Green Card sponsorship via PERM, ask VCU's HR or international services team for the typical processing timeline upfront. DOL PERM adjudication alone can take over a year, and faculty contracts need to account for that.

Find Teaching at Virginia Commonwealth University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Virginia Commonwealth University sponsor H-1B visas for Teachings?
Yes, Virginia Commonwealth University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Teaching positions. Sponsorship is most common for full-time faculty and instructor roles where a specialty occupation degree requirement can be clearly established. Adjunct and part-time Teaching appointments may have more limited sponsorship options, so confirming the role type before applying is the practical first step.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at Virginia Commonwealth University?
Applications for Teaching roles at VCU are submitted through the university's online careers portal, where each listing specifies required documents such as a CV, cover letter, teaching philosophy statement, and reference contacts. For roles requiring visa sponsorship, you can also browse open Teaching positions at VCU filtered by sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate before applying directly through VCU's portal.
Which visa types does VCU commonly use for Teaching roles?
VCU sponsors H-1B visas for specialty occupation Teaching roles and J-1 visas for visiting scholars, exchange faculty, and short-term academic appointments. For permanent positions, VCU supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process. F-1 OPT and CPT are available for recent graduates in Teaching-related roles where degree requirements align.
What qualifications are expected for Teaching positions at VCU?
Most Teaching roles at VCU require at minimum a master's degree in the relevant discipline, with tenure-track faculty positions typically requiring a doctorate. Candidates should also have documented teaching experience, a record of scholarship or professional practice in their field, and for H-1B eligibility, a direct connection between their specific degree and the subject matter they'll be teaching.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a VCU Teaching role?
For H-1B sponsorship, VCU must file a Labor Condition Application with DOL before submitting the USCIS petition. Standard USCIS processing runs several months, while premium processing brings it down to roughly 15 business days. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship involves DOL labor certification, which can add one to two years beyond the initial H-1B approval before permanent residency is secured.
