Verify your credentials meet ECFMG standards early
U.S. academic medical employers require ECFMG certification before a visa petition can move forward. Confirm your medical degree, USMLE steps, and clinical training are all verified well before you start applying to UK HealthCare physician openings.
Target departments with active recruitment cycles
University of Kentucky's physician hiring is decentralized across departments like internal medicine, surgery, and psychiatry. Applying directly through UK HealthCare's faculty or clinical recruitment portals puts your application in front of the hiring department, not just central HR.
Ask about J-1 waiver pathways at the offer stage
If you completed a J-1 residency or fellowship, clarify the waiver route before accepting an offer. University of Kentucky operates in a state with Conrad 30 waiver slots, and confirming whether the department will support your application affects your H-1B timeline significantly.
Understand when PERM filing enters the picture
For Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3, your employer files a PERM labor certification with DOL before petitioning USCIS. At an academic medical center, this process often begins during your first or second year, so align your expectations with the department's typical timeline.
Use Migrate Mate to identify active physician openings
Physician roles at large academic health systems turn over frequently but aren't always easy to track. Use Migrate Mate to filter University of Kentucky physician jobs by visa sponsorship type so you're only spending time on roles that match your authorization needs.
Clarify H-1B cap exemption status before your start date
University of Kentucky qualifies as a cap-exempt employer under USCIS rules, meaning H-1B petitions for physician roles can be filed at any time of year without waiting for the annual lottery. Confirm this directly with the department's HR or legal team during negotiation.

Find Physician at University of Kentucky JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Kentucky sponsor H-1B visas for Physicians?
Yes. University of Kentucky sponsors H-1B visas for Physician roles and qualifies as a cap-exempt institution under USCIS rules, meaning petitions can be filed year-round without entering the annual lottery. This is a meaningful advantage for international physicians who need predictable timelines, since cap-subject H-1B filings are limited to one registration window per year.
Which visa types are commonly used for Physician roles at University of Kentucky?
H-1B is the most common nonimmigrant visa for physicians at U.S. academic medical centers, including University of Kentucky. J-1 is frequently used during residency and fellowship training, with many physicians transitioning to H-1B afterward via a Conrad 30 or IGA waiver. For permanent residence, University of Kentucky supports EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa pathways, which require PERM labor certification filed with DOL before the USCIS petition.
How do I apply for Physician jobs at University of Kentucky?
Applications for physician positions go through UK HealthCare's faculty and clinical recruitment portals, with openings listed by department. You can also browse physician roles at University of Kentucky that include visa sponsorship through Migrate Mate, which filters listings by sponsorship type. Having your CV, ECFMG certificate, board certification, and medical license documentation ready before applying speeds up the credentialing review.
What qualifications are expected for Physician roles at University of Kentucky?
Most physician openings at University of Kentucky require completion of an accredited residency program, active or eligible Kentucky medical licensure, and board certification or eligibility in the relevant specialty. ECFMG certification is required for international medical graduates. Academic roles within the College of Medicine may also expect a record of scholarly activity, research interest, or prior teaching experience depending on the department.
How do I plan my timeline if I need H-1B sponsorship for a Physician role at University of Kentucky?
Because University of Kentucky is cap-exempt, H-1B petitions for physician roles can be filed at any point, so your timeline is driven by credentialing and internal processes rather than USCIS filing windows. Standard USCIS processing runs several months, with premium processing available to reduce that to 15 business days. If you're transitioning from J-1 status, factor in Conrad 30 waiver processing time, which can add 60 to 90 days before the H-1B petition is filed.
