University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus
Department: Anesthesiology
Job Title: Instructor (NP/PA)
Requisition #: 38767
Position #: 00844450
Job Summary:
The successful preoperative management of patients has been shown to lead to better outcomes: reduced morbidity and mortality, decreased hospital lengths of stay, improved patient experience and a reduction in OR cancellations and delays. The Pre-Procedure Services clinic is a preoperative clinic which is well-respected and valued by surgeons and anesthesiologists at the University of Colorado. It is a collaborative clinic with key contributions from attending physicians, residents, students, nurses, and medical assistants. The core component of the clinic, however, is our talented group of engaged Advanced Practice Providers (NPs and/or PAs) providing excellent clinical care to complex patients every day. The essential responsibility of the Instructor (NP/PA) position is seeing patients in the PPS clinic. These may be virtual or in-person visits. Patients seen in clinic are medically complex with multiple comorbidities. The goal of the clinic is to ensure patients are medically optimized for their procedures, in order to reduce the risk of complications in the perioperative period so that patients may have the best possible outcomes. PPS is currently in the process of expanding our capacity to see patients and developing multiple clinical improvement pathways. To accomplish this, we are currently hiring additional APPs (NPs or PAs) to join our high-performing team. Services we commonly perform include: comprehensive surgical risk assessment, medication management, advanced testing and diagnostics, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) screening and testing, telemedicine visits, and collaborative consultation with other subspecialties. Processes we are currently developing include penicillin allergy delabeling/testing, anemia prehabilitation, smoking cessation support and nutritional prehabilitation. An attending physician anesthesiologist is present in clinic every day to support APP questions and guide clinical decision making. There is extensive training and onboarding when joining our clinic and there is always additional support and guidance available. This is a very team-oriented, supportive environment enabling APPs to work at the top of their scope while requiring broad clinical knowledge and excellent problem-solving skills.

Verify Your Credentials Meet Colorado Licensing Standards
Colorado requires PA licensure through the DORA Division of Professions and Occupations. Confirm your NCCPA certification and graduate transcripts are ready before applying, since University of Colorado's hiring teams typically initiate sponsorship only after state licensure is confirmed.
Target Campus Health and Hospital-Based Postings Separately
University of Colorado hires PAs across Anschutz Medical Campus, student health centers, and affiliated clinics. These units post through different portals and have different hiring timelines, so track each separately to avoid missing roles that fit your specialty.
Ask HR Which Visa Categories the Department Supports
Academic medical centers often sponsor H-1B and TN for PA roles, but individual departments may have different preferences or budget constraints. Ask your hiring contact directly which categories their unit has processed before, so you're not surprised late in the offer stage.
Plan Around H-1B Cap Timing If You're on OPT
If you're on F-1 OPT, USCIS H-1B registration opens each March for an October 1 start date. University of Colorado can file cap-subject H-1B petitions, but your OPT must cover the gap. Confirm your OPT expiration date and STEM extension eligibility before accepting an offer.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter PA Roles by Sponsorship History
Browsing open PA postings without knowing which have led to actual sponsorship wastes time. Use Migrate Mate to filter University of Colorado PA roles by verified sponsorship activity, so you're applying to positions where international hiring has happened before.
Negotiate Filing Timeline Into Your Offer Letter
Once an offer is extended, ask for the expected LCA filing date with DOL and the anticipated I-129 submission window. Academic employers sometimes delay initiating paperwork until after a start date is set, which can compress your authorization window if you're changing status.

Find Physician Assistant at University of Colorado JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does University of Colorado sponsor H-1B visas for Physician Assistants?
Yes, University of Colorado sponsors H-1B visas for Physician Assistant roles. As a large academic medical institution, CU has established immigration infrastructure and works with legal counsel to file petitions for qualified candidates. Sponsorship is typically initiated after a formal offer is extended and state PA licensure in Colorado is confirmed or in progress.
Which visa types are commonly used for Physician Assistant roles at University of Colorado?
H-1B is the most common category for PA roles at University of Colorado, since the position qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a master's degree or equivalent. TN status is an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals if the role meets classification criteria. J-1 sponsorship may be available for training-adjacent positions, and F-1 OPT and CPT are used for candidates earlier in their authorization period.
What qualifications or experience are expected for Physician Assistant positions at University of Colorado?
University of Colorado PA roles generally require graduation from an ARC-PA-accredited program, NCCPA certification, and eligibility for Colorado state licensure. Clinical experience expectations vary by department. Positions within the Anschutz Medical Campus system or affiliated specialty clinics may require subspecialty experience, while student health and primary care roles tend to be more open to new graduates.
How do I apply for Physician Assistant jobs at University of Colorado?
Applications for PA positions at University of Colorado go through the CU Careers portal at cu.edu/cu-careers. Postings are distributed across campus health, Anschutz Medical Campus, and affiliated clinical sites. You can also browse verified PA openings with sponsorship history through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa type so you can focus on positions where international candidates have been hired before.
How do I know if a specific Physician Assistant role at University of Colorado will lead to sponsorship?
Not every PA posting at University of Colorado will include explicit sponsorship language, but the institution's history of filing across multiple visa categories is a strong indicator of willingness. The most reliable approach is to ask the recruiter or hiring manager directly during the initial screening call whether the department has processed sponsorship for this role type, and confirm the timeline before advancing through interviews.
