Align Your Credentials to Specialty Occupation Standards
Business Operations roles at universities often blend general administration with finance or compliance functions. Make sure your degree field directly maps to the specific role title, not just business broadly, since USCIS evaluates specialty occupation fit at the position level.
Target Duke's Central Administrative Units First
Duke's central divisions, including Finance, Budget, and Procurement, post roles more likely to carry sponsorship support than departmental coordinator positions. Focus your search on university-wide operational units where the role scope and degree requirements are more clearly defined.
Understand Duke's Internal Visa Office Process
Duke processes sponsorship through its Office of Visa and Immigration Services, not through a third-party attorney hired ad hoc. Knowing this means you can ask informed questions about their internal timeline and what documentation they'll collect from you early in the hiring process.
Search Sponsored Business Operations Roles on Migrate Mate
Filter for open Business Operations positions at Duke University on Migrate Mate to see roles where sponsorship is actively available. This saves time you'd otherwise spend manually vetting whether individual job postings are open to visa candidates.
Clarify H-1B Cap Timing Before Accepting an Offer
If you're not currently in H-1B status, Duke can only file a new cap-subject petition for an October 1 start date, with registration closing in mid-March. Confirm your timeline with the hiring team so your offer terms reflect that employment start date realistically.
Request LCA Details When Evaluating Your Offer
Duke files a Labor Condition Application with DOL before submitting your H-1B petition. Ask HR which prevailing wage level they've designated for your role, since this directly affects your offered salary and signals how the position is classified for immigration purposes.

Find Business Operations at Duke University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Duke University sponsor H-1B visas for Business Operations?
Yes, Duke University sponsors H-1B visas for Business Operations roles, particularly in finance, procurement, compliance, and project management functions where the position meets USCIS specialty occupation criteria. Sponsorship is handled through Duke's Office of Visa and Immigration Services, which manages the Labor Condition Application filing with DOL and the subsequent H-1B petition to USCIS. Eligibility depends on the specific role and your qualifications.
How do I apply for Business Operations jobs at Duke University?
Applications go through Duke's official careers portal, where Business Operations roles are listed by department. You can also find sponsorship-eligible openings on Migrate Mate, which filters for positions open to visa candidates. When applying, tailor your materials to the specific unit, whether that's Finance, Budget and Planning, or Procurement, since each has distinct scope and degree expectations that affect both hiring and sponsorship eligibility.
Which visa types does Duke University use for Business Operations roles?
Duke sponsors H-1B visas most commonly for Business Operations hires, and also files E-3 petitions for Australian citizens in qualifying roles. For longer-term pathways, Duke supports PERM-based Green Card sponsorship through the EB-2 and EB-3 categories for employees who have demonstrated sustained performance. The appropriate visa type depends on your nationality, degree level, and how the specific role is classified under USCIS and DOL guidelines.
What qualifications does Duke University expect for Business Operations roles?
Most Business Operations positions at Duke require at minimum a bachelor's degree in a related field such as finance, accounting, business administration, or a discipline directly tied to the role's function. Roles in budget analysis or financial planning often prefer candidates with experience in higher education or nonprofit finance environments. For sponsorship purposes, your degree field needs to align specifically with the job duties, not just business generally, since USCIS evaluates this at the position level.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Duke Business Operations hire?
From offer acceptance to work authorization, the timeline depends on your current visa status and the petition type. For a new H-1B, Duke must file during the March registration window for an October 1 start, meaning the lead time can be six months or more. If you're transferring an existing H-1B from another employer, Duke can file a portability petition and you can begin work once USCIS receives it, typically within a few weeks of submission.
