Align Your Credentials to Defense Hardware Standards
Viasat's Mechanical Technician roles frequently require hands-on experience with RF systems, satellite payloads, or mil-spec assembly. Review IPC and J-STD certifications before applying, since these signal readiness for the hardware environments Viasat actually hires into.
Identify Which Viasat Sites Are Actively Hiring
Viasat's Mechanical Technician openings are spread across facilities in Carlsbad, Tempe, and Duluth. Targeting a specific site matters because facility type, product line, and visa sponsorship capacity can differ across locations within the same company.
Clarify OPT or CPT Authorization Before Your First Interview
If you're on F-1 status, confirm your OPT authorization dates and STEM extension eligibility before outreach. Viasat's hiring teams want to understand your current work authorization window, and a clear answer prevents delays during the offer stage.
Understand How TN Status Applies to This Role
Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for TN status under the engineer or technologist category if the Mechanical Technician role requires a qualifying bachelor's degree. Confirm the job description explicitly states a degree requirement before relying on this pathway with your recruiting contact.
Time Your H-1B Filing Around Viasat's Hiring Cycle
H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed by USCIS's April 1 deadline for an October 1 start. If you receive an offer after the filing window closes, negotiate a deferred start date so Viasat can register you in the following year's lottery.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Sponsoring Mechanical Technician Roles
Search Migrate Mate to filter Mechanical Technician openings at Viasat by the visa types they actively sponsor. This lets you confirm which roles at specific facilities are open to candidates who need H-1B, TN, or OPT sponsorship before you apply.

Does Viasat sponsor H-1B visas for Mechanical Technicians?
Yes, Viasat sponsors H-1B visas for Mechanical Technician roles. The company has a consistent history of sponsoring international candidates in technical and hardware-focused positions. Because H-1B cap-subject petitions have an April 1 filing deadline and an October 1 start date, you'll need an offer in hand before the lottery registration window opens in March each year.
How do I apply for Mechanical Technician jobs at Viasat?
You can browse and apply for Mechanical Technician openings at Viasat directly through their careers portal, or use Migrate Mate to filter for roles by visa type so you only see positions open to sponsored candidates. Tailoring your resume to highlight mil-spec assembly, RF hardware, or test equipment experience is strongly recommended, since those are the technical areas Viasat's Mechanical Technician postings most commonly emphasize.
Which visa types does Viasat commonly use for Mechanical Technician roles?
Viasat sponsors several visa categories for Mechanical Technicians, including H-1B, F-1 OPT and CPT, TN, J-1, and employment-based Green Cards through the EB-2 and EB-3 preference categories. The right pathway depends on your nationality, current status, and the specific requirements of the role. TN is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals where the position requires a qualifying degree field.
What qualifications does Viasat expect for Mechanical Technician positions?
Viasat's Mechanical Technician roles typically require an associate's degree or higher in electronics, mechanical technology, or a related field, combined with hands-on experience in areas like satellite hardware assembly, RF system testing, or precision electromechanical integration. Industry certifications such as IPC-A-610 or J-STD-001 are frequently listed as preferred qualifications and can strengthen a sponsorship case.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Mechanical Technician offer at Viasat?
Timeline depends heavily on which visa category applies. F-1 OPT authorization can be in place before your start date if your school processes the EAD in time, typically three to five months. H-1B sponsorship requires waiting for the October 1 start date after the April lottery. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship through EB-3 can take several years depending on your country of birth and the DOL audit queue.
