About us:
One team. Global challenges. Infinite opportunities. At Viasat, we’re on a mission to deliver connections with the capacity to change the world. For more than 35 years, Viasat has helped shape how consumers, businesses, governments and militaries around the globe communicate. We’re looking for people who think big, act fearlessly, and create an inclusive environment that drives positive impact to join our team.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Viasat is building a next-generation Direct-to-Device (D2D) Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) platform that integrates satellite and terrestrial cellular technologies. We are seeking a Device Platform Product Manager to join our Platform Product Management team and lead the definition of device, module, and terminal platform requirements that enable scalable, high-performance D2D services. This role focuses on the hardware and terminal side of the platform, complementing the ground infrastructure architecture focus of the existing Ground Infrastructure Solutions Architect role.
This role sits at the intersection of product strategy, hardware platform architecture, RF and system tradeoffs, and ecosystem execution. You will drive product requirements for modules and terminals, align with chipset, OEM, and vendor ecosystems, and help translate platform goals into deployable device capabilities spanning modem, RF front end, WLAN, GPS, memory, and mechanical constraints.
This role is central to ensuring Viasat’s D2D NTN platform has a credible, scalable, and commercially viable device strategy—from terminal requirements and component choices to ecosystem alignment and platform readiness. While the existing Ground Infrastructure Solutions Architect role shapes the network-side and interworking architecture, this role ensures the device and module side of the platform is equally well-defined and executable.
DEVICE PLATFORM DEFINITION & ROADMAP
- Define product requirements and feature roadmaps for D2D NTN devices, terminals, modules, and related hardware platforms, including capability priorities, supported bands, interfaces, and product assumptions.
- Translate platform goals into clear hardware and subsystem requirements spanning modem, RF front end, WLAN, GPS, memory, power, and mechanical considerations.
- Partner with platform, systems, and engineering teams to sequence features based on technical readiness, ecosystem dependencies, and commercial priorities.
TERMINAL / MODULE ARCHITECTURE & REQUIREMENTS
- Own terminal- and module-level requirements for D2D NTN use cases, including RF architecture, supported 5G/LTE capabilities, hardware constraints, and integration assumptions.
- Define requirements for LGA modules, customer premises equipment, mobile hotspots, and other device forms as appropriate for the platform roadmap.
- Drive technical tradeoffs across performance, power, cost, thermal, component availability, and implementation feasibility.
RF, MODEM, AND HARDWARE ECOSYSTEM LEADERSHIP
- Lead cross-functional alignment across RF systems, modem systems, antenna teams, hardware engineering, software, test, and program management to converge on device architecture and product scope.
- Work with chipset vendors, OEMs, module vendors, and internal teams to evaluate feasible implementations and support productization decisions.
- Guide key design and requirement decisions related to RF front end architecture, modem integration, subsystem selection, and product platform scalability.
COMMERCIAL & PRODUCT EXECUTION
- Develop product inputs for RFPs/RFQs and help shape commercially viable device and module offerings.
- Conduct or guide BoM-level tradeoff analysis to balance cost, performance, and market needs.
- Support customer and partner engagement with technically grounded product positioning, requirement framing, and execution planning.
VALIDATION, READINESS, AND PERFORMANCE
- Partner with engineering and test teams to define validation goals, readiness criteria, and performance measures for terminal platforms.
- Support design reviews, trade studies, lab bring-up, and issue triage related to device performance, RF optimization, and platform readiness.
- Help ensure the device/platform roadmap is grounded in real implementation constraints and performance targets.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- Significant experience in product management and/or hardware platform leadership for wireless devices, modules, or terminals.
- Deep understanding of RF front end design, modem/platform integration, and device-level tradeoffs for cellular systems.
- Experience defining hardware features and requirements across multi-disciplinary subsystems.
- Strong working knowledge of 5G NR, LTE, modem systems, RF systems, and related 3GPP-driven device requirements.
- Experience working across cross-functional teams including engineering, program management, and ecosystem partners.
- Ability to make disciplined tradeoffs among performance, cost, and implementation feasibility.
WHAT WILL HELP YOU ON THE JOB:
- Experience with NR-NTN, satellite-related device requirements, or adjacent satellite/cellular integration topics.
- Direct experience with LGA modules, CPE, mobile hotspots, or similar connected device categories.
- Experience with RFP/RFQ development, component selection, and BoM analysis.
- Familiarity with RF and lab validation environments, including test equipment and performance characterization workflows.
- Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.

Align Your Portfolio to Satellite Systems Work
Viasat's Product Software Engineers work on firmware, network protocols, and ground system software for satellite platforms. Showcasing projects in embedded C++, RF systems, or network stack development signals direct relevance before your application even reaches a recruiter.
Clarify Sponsorship Scope During Initial Screening
Viasat sponsors multiple visa categories, but coverage varies by role level and business unit. Ask your recruiter early whether the specific team you're interviewing for supports H-1B filing and PERM-based Green Card sponsorship, not just OPT extensions.
Time OPT Applications Around Viasat's Hiring Cycles
Viasat posts Product Software Engineer roles heavily in Q1 and Q3. Filing your OPT with your DSO at least 90 days before your program end date gives you the authorization window needed to start without a gap if you land an offer.
Prepare for Security Clearance Compatibility Questions
Many Viasat Product Software Engineer roles support defense contracts, which can complicate H-1B sponsorship due to export control restrictions. Confirm with your recruiter whether the specific position is open to sponsored candidates before investing time in the interview process.
Use Migrate Mate to Identify Sponsorship-Confirmed Viasat Openings
Not every Viasat job listing explicitly states visa sponsorship availability. Use Migrate Mate to filter for Product Software Engineer roles at Viasat that are confirmed for sponsorship, so you're targeting positions where the path forward actually exists.
Understand H-1B Cap Timing If You're Transitioning from OPT
If you're on F-1 OPT and receive an offer, Viasat must file your H-1B petition in April for an October 1 start. Coordinate your offer acceptance and cap-gap eligibility carefully so your work authorization stays continuous through the USCIS lottery and approval process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Viasat sponsor H-1B visas for Product Software Engineers?
Yes, Viasat sponsors H-1B visas for Product Software Engineers. The company has an active sponsorship track record for engineering roles in its satellite and networking divisions. That said, some positions tied to defense contracts may have export control restrictions that limit H-1B eligibility, so confirming sponsorship availability for your specific role and team during the recruiter screening is important.
Which visa types does Viasat commonly sponsor for Product Software Engineer roles?
Viasat sponsors H-1B, TN visa (for Canadian and Mexican nationals), F-1 OPT and CPT, J-1 visa, and employment-based Green Cards through the EB-2 and EB-3 categories. For full-time hires, H-1B is the most common path. TN visa is a practical alternative for eligible nationals since it bypasses the H-1B lottery and can be obtained at the port of entry.
How do I apply for Product Software Engineer jobs at Viasat?
You can browse and apply for Product Software Engineer openings at Viasat through Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for roles confirmed to support visa sponsorship. Viasat's roles in this function typically require a relevant engineering degree and experience with software development in connectivity, satellite, or embedded systems environments. Tailoring your application to the product domain of the specific team strengthens your candidacy.
What qualifications does Viasat expect for Product Software Engineer candidates who need sponsorship?
Viasat generally looks for a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related field, which satisfies the H-1B specialty occupation requirement. Practical experience with software development in networking, satellite systems, or embedded platforms carries significant weight. Candidates without a four-year degree can sometimes qualify through the DOL's three-for-one experience equivalency rule, where three years of relevant work experience substitutes for one year of formal education.
How do I understand the H-1B filing timeline if I receive an offer from Viasat?
H-1B petitions are filed once a year in April, with an October 1 start date if selected in the USCIS lottery. If you're on F-1 OPT when Viasat extends an offer, cap-gap protection automatically extends your work authorization through the lottery and approval process. Viasat's HR and legal teams typically manage the filing, but understanding these windows helps you negotiate a start date and plan your transition without an authorization gap.
