About us:
One team. Global challenges. Infinite opportunities. At Viasat, we’re on a mission to deliver connections with the capacity to change the world. For more than 35 years, Viasat has helped shape how consumers, businesses, governments and militaries around the globe communicate. We’re looking for people who think big, act fearlessly, and create an inclusive environment that drives positive impact to join our team.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Snappi is a Viasat subsidiary building a delivery layer organized around time-to-pixel instead of time-to-byte—an intelligent content delivery network that continuously optimizes ecommerce web performance. A CDN that learns. A conventional CDN moves every byte as fast as it can. We figure out which bytes the page needs to render fast. Knowing the difference is a learning problem, not a caching one.
We combine startup agility with enterprise stability: a small, deliberately lean team in the business-model validation phase, with the benefits and resources of an established global company behind us. What you build ships to production and gets measured against whether it actually moves the needle for merchants. You will build and operate our intelligent CDN platform serving global traffic, working across core infrastructure and AI-powered operations—web performance optimization, browser technologies (resource hints, compression dictionaries, Early Hints, HTTP/2 & HTTP/3), and emerging standards. Because the team is small, you won't own a narrow slice: you'll follow problems across the edge proxy, the ML pipeline, data collection, and the tooling that lets a handful of engineers run a system at scale.
You are the kind of engineer who finds deeply understanding technical problems—and coming up with simple, innovative solutions to them—genuinely interesting. When a number looks wrong, you want to know why. When an elegant solution emerges, you get a real thrill out of it. That disposition pays off quickly here: you'd work directly with the founder, often get first crack at solving the problems you've identified, and see your own ideas reach production in days rather than quarters. None of which is about long hours. We don't think endurance is a talent, and nobody here is keeping score on who worked late. What we're describing is enthusiasm, not sacrifice.
Boston or New England–based candidates. We're a hybrid remote team, with 2-3 days per month at the Boston office—though we'd expect more time on-site early on, while you're ramping up and getting to know everyone.
THE DAY-TO-DAY:
- Design, develop, and deploy cloud and edge network infrastructure software across AWS and GCP (our edge runs on Go / Caddy modules on GCE)
- Own the deployment path for what you build—CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, and the observability to know it's working
- Contribute to the ML pipeline that optimizes routing, caching, and delivery decisions—no ML background required, just the appetite to learn it
- Work with real-user and synthetic performance data flowing through our collection and analytics pipeline
- Build self-healing systems that detect, diagnose, and resolve production issues automatically
- Help build the autonomous agent architecture we run on: systems that keep making progress unattended, that a person can inspect and redirect from anywhere, and that hand off cleanly to a human or another agent. Genuinely unsolved territory—you'd be helping invent it, not implementing someone's finished design
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- 5+ years experience in software development/engineering
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, or equivalent experience. We especially value interdisciplinary backgrounds—a BA in CS, or someone who explored philosophy, literature, design, or other fields alongside their technical studies
- Systems design: You've designed and operated backend services in production, not just contributed features to them—you think about failure modes, deployment, and what happens at 3am
- Foundation: Strong problem-solving, continuous learner, collaborative. You can explain something complex and make the listener understand it—and you treat a technical conversation as a shared build, integrating pushback in real time, rather than a lecture to defend
- Optimizer instinct and ownership: You notice inefficient or broken things and can't leave them alone. You think about uptime, customers, and impact the way a founder does—anticipating failure modes and investigating without being told each step
- Intellectual honesty: You're comfortable saying "I don't know" and candid about the edges of your understanding. We'd rather see genuine reasoning than performed expertise
- Energized by what AI makes possible: Less about specific tools than disposition. One engineer can attempt far more than they could three years ago, and the people we want are already playing with that rather than waiting for it to settle—with judgment about when to trust these tools and when to push back
WHAT WILL HELP YOU ON THE JOB:
- Technical Skills: Solid fundamentals in Python, Go, Rust, Java, or C/C++, data structures, algorithms, complexity analysis, networking concepts (DNS, HTTP, TCP/IP), and web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React). Familiarity with web performance metrics (LCP, CLS), edge/CDN internals, ML for real-world decision-making, or data pipelines is a plus—but we care more about how you learn than what you already know
- Systems and product thinking: You reason about second- and third-order effects—who wins, who loses, what breaks, what emerges—and you care about whether what we build actually creates value for real users and customers, not just whether it's a good piece of engineering
SALARY RANGE:
$165,000.00 - $260,500.00 / annually. For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $205,000.00 - $307,000.00 / annually: At Viasat, we consider many factors when it comes to compensation, including the scope of the position as well as your background and experience. Base pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Additional cash or stock incentives may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered. Align your skills to satellite systems work
Viasat's Software Engineer roles frequently require experience in networking protocols, embedded systems, or RF signal processing. Tailoring your resume to reflect these domains, not just general software development, signals fit to hiring managers screening for security-clearance-eligible technical profiles.
Confirm clearance eligibility before applying
Many Viasat Software Engineer roles require or prefer U.S. security clearance eligibility. Visa holders on H-1B or F-1 OPT are generally ineligible for clearance, so identify which postings are clearance-optional before investing time in an application.
Target open roles through Migrate Mate
Viasat posts Software Engineer openings across multiple locations and divisions. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for roles that list visa sponsorship, so you're not applying blind to positions the team can't support for international candidates.
Request OPT start dates that match project cycles
If you're starting on F-1 OPT, coordinate your requested start date with Viasat's onboarding timeline. Electronics and hardware companies often have project-based hiring, so a mismatch between your EAD validity and their sprint calendar can complicate an otherwise clean offer.
Understand the H-1B filing window before your offer stage
H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed in April for an October 1 start. If your offer comes outside that window, ask Viasat's HR team whether they can bridge you through OPT extension or cap-exempt pathways while you wait for the next lottery cycle.
Prepare for PERM documentation early for Green Card pathways
Viasat sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for Software Engineers, which requires PERM labor certification through the DOL. That process involves documenting that no qualified U.S. worker was displaced, so gather performance reviews and educational credentials well before your employer initiates the filing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Viasat sponsor H-1B visas for Software Engineers?
Yes, Viasat sponsors H-1B visas for Software Engineer roles. The company has a consistent record of filing H-1B petitions for technical positions across its satellite communications and network systems divisions. Because many roles also require security clearance eligibility, you should confirm a specific posting supports sponsorship before applying, as clearance-required positions may not be available to H-1B holders.
How do I apply for Software Engineer jobs at Viasat?
You can apply directly through Viasat's careers page or browse their open Software Engineer roles on Migrate Mate, which filters for positions that offer visa sponsorship. Before applying, review the job description carefully for clearance requirements, as roles designated for cleared personnel are generally not available to candidates requiring visa sponsorship.
Which visa types does Viasat commonly sponsor for Software Engineers?
Viasat sponsors H-1B, TN visa, J-1 visa, and F-1 OPT and CPT for Software Engineers, and also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways for longer-term employees. TN visa is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles. The right visa type depends on your nationality, degree field, and where you are in your career.
What qualifications does Viasat expect for sponsored Software Engineer roles?
Most Viasat Software Engineer postings expect a bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field, which also satisfies the specialty occupation requirement for H-1B eligibility. Experience in networking, embedded systems, C or C++ development, or satellite communications platforms is frequently listed. Candidates with graduate degrees may find stronger alignment with EB-2 Green Card sponsorship over time.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take when joining Viasat as a Software Engineer?
Timeline depends on the visa type. H-1B cap-subject petitions are filed in April and take effect October 1, so if your offer falls outside that window, you may need to bridge on OPT or another status. TN status can be obtained at the border or port of entry for Canadians, making it faster. PERM-based Green Card filings through DOL typically take one to three years from initiation to approval.
