About Voyant
Voyant Photonics, based in the heart of New York City, is transforming machine perception with a new class of LiDAR devices that are compact enough to fit in the palm of your hand and powerful enough to measure range, velocity, and reflectivity with unparalleled accuracy. By leveraging cutting-edge silicon photonic chips smaller than your fingertip, we deliver sensors that are not only revolutionary in performance but also affordable enough to integrate into any system. Our technology disrupts the status quo of bulky, expensive, and power-hungry LiDAR systems, making high-precision sensing accessible for widespread adoption in robotics, autonomous vehicles, drones, industrial automation, and beyond.
Position Overview
We're looking for a technically sharp intern who loves making complex technology accessible through great documentation and examples. You'll be the bridge between our cutting-edge LiDAR sensors and the developers who integrate them, turning our APIs into something customers love to work with. This role is up to ~60-70% technical writing and documentation infrastructure, with the remaining time spent building software demos and sample applications that showcase what's possible with our sensors. If you geek out over well-crafted docs and clear code examples, this is your role.
Timeframe: This internship lasts 2–6 months with a minimum commitment of 16 hours per week, and there is potential to convert to a full-time role.
Location: NYC
Responsibilities:
Primary (~60-70% of time):
- Write and maintain comprehensive API documentation for C++ and Python bindings
- Create tutorials, quick-start guides, and integration examples that get developers up and running quickly
- Build and maintain tooling to keep documentation synchronized with API and firmware updates
- Manage documentation infrastructure and workflows (CI/CD, version control, publishing)
- Ensure documentation clarity, accuracy, and completeness across all customer-facing materials
Secondary (~30-40% of time):
- Build sample applications and integration demos using our LiDAR sensors
- Collect and curate example datasets that demonstrate sensor capabilities
- Create ROS/ROS2 bridge usage examples and robotics framework integrations
- Develop visual demos and code snippets for product marketing and customer onboarding
Qualifications
- Pursuing degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics, or related technical field
- Strong written communication skills with attention to clarity and detail
- Programming experience in C++, Rust, and/or Python
- Ability to understand and explain technical concepts to diverse audiences
- Self-directed learner who can take ownership of documentation projects
Preferred Qualification:
- Familiarity with documentation tools (Sphinx, Doxygen, MkDocs, ReadTheDocs, etc.)
- Experience with ROS/ROS2 or robotics frameworks
- Prior technical writing, documentation, or developer relations experience
- Understanding of API design principles and developer experience best practices
- Basic scripting/automation skills for documentation tooling
- Experience with version control (Git/GitHub) and CI/CD pipelines
- Familiarity with LiDAR, point clouds, or sensor data
What we offer
- Team events and company meetups
- Complimentary lunch provided daily at our NYC office
- Opportunity to contribute directly to the development of next-generation LiDAR products
- Mentorship from senior hardware, photonics, and systems engineers
- Hands-on experience with PCB design, mechanical prototyping, and test automation
- Competitive compensation and potential for conversion to full-time

Align your portfolio to photonic systems work
Voyant Photonics builds LiDAR and integrated photonics hardware, so software roles often touch embedded systems, sensor integration, or real-time signal processing. Tailor your GitHub and resume to reflect that stack before applying.
Ask directly about H-1B sponsorship in the offer stage
During offer negotiation, ask whether the company has established immigration counsel and whether H-1B filing is handled in-house or through a law firm. This tells you how smoothly the process will run before you commit.
Search Voyant Photonics openings on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters Software Engineer jobs by visa sponsorship type, so you can browse Voyant Photonics roles and confirm which positions are actively open for H-1B, OPT, or TN candidates without sifting through unsponsored listings.
Prepare a degree equivalency letter for non-U.S. credentials
USCIS requires H-1B petitions to demonstrate a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization before your employer files the I-129.

Find Software Engineer at Voyant Photonics JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Voyant Photonics sponsor H-1B visas for Software Engineers?
Yes, Voyant Photonics has sponsored H-1B visas for Software Engineers. As a for-profit U.S. employer, their petitions are cap-subject, meaning sponsorship is tied to the annual USCIS lottery with a March registration window and an October 1 start date. Confirm sponsorship intent early in the interview process so your timeline aligns with the filing cycle.
How do I apply for Software Engineer jobs at Voyant Photonics?
Applications go through Voyant Photonics' careers page or job boards that list their open roles. If you need visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate to browse their current Software Engineer openings filtered by sponsorship type, which saves time identifying which roles are open to H-1B, OPT, or TN candidates before you apply.
Which visa types does Voyant Photonics sponsor for Software Engineer roles?
Voyant Photonics has sponsored H-1B visas and has also worked with candidates on F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, TN, and J-1 status for Software Engineer positions. OPT and CPT allow you to start immediately while longer-term sponsorship is arranged. TN is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles under USMCA.
What qualifications does Voyant Photonics expect for Software Engineer candidates?
Software Engineer roles at Voyant Photonics typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related technical field. Given the company's focus on photonic hardware, experience with embedded systems, low-level software, sensor pipelines, or hardware-software integration strengthens your profile considerably over general software development experience.
How do I plan my timeline if I need H-1B sponsorship at Voyant Photonics?
H-1B registration opens each March through USCIS, with lottery selection in late March and petition filing from April for an October 1 start. If you receive an offer outside this window, ask whether the company can support your current status through OPT or another nonimmigrant category until the next H-1B cycle begins. The 60-day grace period between jobs means timing your transition carefully matters.
