Construction Jobs in Norfolk: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a construction job in Norfolk?
Focus your search on the sectors that drive local hiring: Navy and federal facility maintenance contractors, commercial developers active along the Elizabeth River waterfront, and residential builders working the Ghent and Ocean View corridors. Candidates with concrete, framing, or MEP credentials get interviews fastest. Showing familiarity with Davis-Bacon wage requirements and federal project compliance gives you a real edge over general applicants in this heavily government-contract market.
Which companies hire constructions in Norfolk?
Employers hiring constructions in Norfolk right now include RQ Construction, Kleinfelder, and City of Norfolk, VA, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. The local market leans heavily toward federal contractors and regional general contractors supporting military, port, and municipal infrastructure projects.
Are there remote construction jobs in Norfolk?
Yes, but only for specific roles. Hands-on trades and site supervision are almost always on-site by nature, while project management, estimating, and scheduling positions occasionally allow hybrid arrangements. About 0% of construction openings tied to Norfolk are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with most of those concentrated in estimating and back-office project coordination rather than field work.
How can I get a construction job in Norfolk with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Norfolk is through a union apprenticeship with locals affiliated with the Hampton Roads Building Trades Council, which places apprentices on federal and commercial projects across the metro. General contractors working large Naval Station support contracts regularly hire entry-level laborers and helpers. Demonstrating OSHA 10 certification and basic tool familiarity will make you a competitive candidate even without a full trade background.
