Does Construction Carpenter work qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your academic program includes construction technology, building trades, civil engineering technology, or a related field where hands-on carpentry directly fulfills a curricular requirement. Your DSO evaluates whether the specific duties, such as framing, form-setting, or finish carpentry, connect to your enrolled coursework. Generic labor tasks that don't map to your program won't qualify.
Can I work full-time as a Construction Carpenter on CPT?
You can, but full-time CPT, meaning 20 or more hours per week, requires explicit I-20 authorization and carries a significant consequence: 12 months of full-time CPT use makes you ineligible for OPT after graduation. Part-time CPT under 20 hours weekly doesn't affect OPT eligibility, so most students in construction programs structure placements carefully around that threshold.
What documentation does a construction employer need to hire me on CPT?
The employer needs your current I-20 showing the CPT authorization dates and employer name, your I-94 confirming valid F-1 status, and your EAD is not required for CPT since the authorization is embedded in the I-20. Many construction firms also ask for your passport and visa stamp for I-9 completion. Confirm the employer is enrolled in E-Verify if the site is federally funded.
How do I find construction companies experienced with CPT placements?
Search Migrate Mate for Construction Carpenter roles posted by employers with work-authorization experience. Most construction hiring happens through project-based channels and union halls rather than traditional job boards, so targeting firms that have processed F-1 hires before saves significant back-and-forth with HR teams unfamiliar with CPT documentation requirements.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the construction project ends early?
CPT authorization is tied to the specific employer and date range on your I-20. If your project ends before the authorized end date, you must stop working immediately and notify your DSO. You can't transfer CPT authorization to a different employer or site without a new DSO approval and an updated I-20. Starting work at a new location without that update is a status violation.
