Does a Maintenance Electrician role qualify for CPT?
It can qualify if your school's curriculum includes electrical systems, industrial maintenance, power distribution, or a related technical field and the role applies those skills directly. Your DSO reviews the job description against your program requirements to make that determination. Roles limited to general labor or facility cleaning without electrical work components typically won't qualify.
Does the employer need to file anything with USCIS for my CPT?
No. CPT is authorized entirely by your school, not by USCIS or your employer. Your DSO issues the authorization and updates your I-20. The employer doesn't file a petition, pay a government fee, or interact with USCIS. That's one reason CPT-authorized positions can start faster than H-1B visa or other employer-sponsored statuses.
Can I work full-time as a Maintenance Electrician on CPT?
Full-time CPT is allowed but comes with a significant consequence: 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your eligibility for OPT after graduation. Most F-1 students in technical programs protect their OPT by staying under the 12-month full-time threshold or using part-time CPT, which doesn't count against that limit.
How do I find Maintenance Electrician employers who are open to CPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you search Maintenance Electrician roles and filter by employers with work-authorization sponsorship history. That filing history is a practical signal that a company understands work-authorization processes. Industrial facilities, utilities, and manufacturing plants are common sectors where these roles exist and where CPT placements have historically worked well.
What happens if my CPT end date passes while I'm still employed?
Working past your CPT authorization end date puts you out of status immediately. You can't retroactively extend CPT after the fact. If you need to continue, your DSO must issue a new CPT authorization before the current one expires. Build in at least two weeks of lead time before your end date to get updated paperwork in place.
