Get Access To All JobsDiesel Mechanic CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Diesel Mechanic job qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your school's DSO can document that the work is an integral part of your curriculum. Programs in diesel technology, automotive systems, or transportation technology most easily satisfy this requirement. The position must appear in your program's cooperative education or practicum component, and the employer must provide a written offer describing the technical duties before your DSO issues the CPT authorization on your I-20.
Can I work full-time as a Diesel Mechanic on CPT?
You can work full-time on CPT if your program requires it, but the immigration consequence is significant. USCIS counts any full-time CPT authorization period toward your OPT eligibility, and 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, which is under 20 hours per week, doesn't affect OPT regardless of duration. Discuss cumulative full-time weeks with your DSO before each semester to protect post-graduation options.
What documents do I need to give an employer before starting?
You'll need your CPT-endorsed I-20 showing the specific employer name and authorized dates, plus your valid F-1 visa stamp and passport. For I-9 verification, your I-20 with CPT endorsement combined with your foreign passport satisfies the List A document requirement. Some fleet operators or government contract shops enrolled in E-Verify will run the online check on day one, so bring originals of all documents.
How do I find Diesel Mechanic employers who understand CPT work authorization?
Migrate Mate is the place to start. It surfaces employers with documented work-authorization filing history, so you can focus on shops and fleet operators already familiar with international student documentation rather than spending interviews explaining CPT basics. Franchised commercial truck dealerships and transit agency maintenance departments tend to have HR teams experienced with co-op and internship I-9 processes.
Does each new CPT employer require a separate DSO authorization?
Yes. CPT is employer-specific, meaning your I-20 endorsement names the particular employer. If you switch shops mid-semester or add a second part-time position at a different location, your DSO must issue a new or amended I-20 before you begin work there. Working for an employer not listed on your CPT-endorsed I-20 is an unauthorized employment violation under F-1 regulations, which puts your status at risk.
