CPT Maintenance Jobs
Maintenance roles in facilities management, building systems, and equipment repair can qualify for CPT when your program includes applied technical training. Your DSO must confirm the work directly integrates with your curriculum before you start. Hands-on roles in HVAC, electrical systems, or preventive maintenance are common CPT placements.

Do maintenance jobs qualify for CPT authorization?
Maintenance roles can qualify for CPT if the work is an integral part of your enrolled curriculum, not just related to your major. Facilities operations, HVAC systems, electrical maintenance, and preventive repair work are common qualifying areas, particularly for students in engineering technology, facilities management, or applied science programs. Your DSO makes the final determination based on how the job duties map to your current coursework.
How do I find maintenance employers who understand CPT work authorization?
Search for maintenance and facilities roles on Migrate Mate, where employers have documented work authorization filing history. Large property management companies, universities, hospitals, and municipal facilities departments are among the most consistent CPT employers in the maintenance sector because their HR teams regularly process employment verification paperwork for international staff and student workers.
Can I start a maintenance job before my updated I-20 arrives?
No. You must have your DSO-issued I-20 with the CPT authorization and the specific employer listed before your first day of work. Starting even one day early is an unauthorized employment violation that can jeopardize your F-1 status. Give your employer a realistic start date that accounts for your school's processing timeline, which varies by institution but often takes five to ten business days.
Does full-time CPT in a maintenance role affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes, if you accumulate 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you lose your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, does not affect OPT regardless of duration. If your maintenance internship runs full-time over a summer or academic year, calculate the cumulative total carefully with your DSO before committing to the role.
What academic programs typically support CPT for maintenance work?
Engineering technology, facilities management, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, construction management, and applied science programs most commonly support CPT placements in maintenance roles. The key requirement is that your school's curriculum explicitly includes practical training or cooperative education as a component, and that the specific maintenance duties in your job offer correspond to coursework you're currently enrolled in or have recently completed.
