Get Access To All JobsTechnician CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Technician jobs qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, provided the role directly integrates with your academic program. A lab technician position tied to a chemistry or biotech degree qualifies; the same title at an unrelated employer typically doesn't. Your DSO evaluates the specific duties and employer, not just the job title, so a detailed written job description from the hiring manager is essential before your school issues CPT authorization.
Can I do full-time CPT as a Technician without losing OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT (20 or more hours per week) is permitted but carries a cost: 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, under 20 hours weekly, doesn't affect OPT regardless of how many semesters you use it. If the Technician role requires full-time hours, weigh that tradeoff carefully with your DSO before accepting.
How do I find Technician employers familiar with CPT hiring?
Migrate Mate lets you filter Technician-adjacent roles by employer LCA filing history, which signals that a company already understands work-authorization processes. Labs, manufacturers, and engineering firms that regularly file Labor Condition Applications with DOL tend to have HR teams experienced with CPT documentation and onboarding timelines, reducing delays on your start date.
What documentation does my employer need to support my CPT authorization?
Your employer needs to provide a signed offer letter or formal job description that specifies your start date, work location, weekly hours, and a description of technical duties that maps to your curriculum. USCIS and SEVP don't receive this directly, but your DSO uses it to update your I-20 with CPT authorization. Generic offer letters that list only a job title are usually insufficient.
Can I work at multiple Technician sites under one CPT authorization?
No. CPT authorization is employer-specific and location-specific as recorded on your I-20. If the Technician role involves rotating between client sites or subsidiary facilities, confirm with your DSO whether a single authorization covers all locations or whether each site requires a separate CPT approval. Working at an unauthorized location, even temporarily, is a status violation.
