Can an F-1 student on CPT legally drive a commercial truck in the U.S.?
Yes, if your DSO authorizes CPT for the specific position and your I-20 is updated before you start. You must also hold a valid CDL for the vehicle class your employer requires. CPT authorization is job-specific, so a new I-20 is needed each time you change employers or roles.
Does truck driving qualify as CPT if my degree is in business or logistics?
It can qualify if your program includes coursework in transportation management, supply chain operations, or logistics and your school considers commercial driving an integral part of that curriculum. Your DSO makes the final determination. Programs in general business without a transportation focus are less likely to support CPT authorization for this role.
How do I find trucking companies that accept CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to browse carriers and freight companies that have hired F-1 students on work authorization. Focus on mid-size to large carriers with dedicated HR teams, as they're more likely to have internal processes for handling CPT paperwork, E-Verify enrollment, and DOT compliance documentation.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my trucking job ends before the I-20 end date?
If your employment ends early, you should notify your DSO promptly. CPT is tied to specific employment, and continuing to work after the job ends violates your F-1 status. Unauthorized work can affect future OPT eligibility, so report changes to your DSO immediately and request an updated I-20 reflecting the actual end date.
Does full-time CPT as a truck driver affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. USCIS rules state that 12 months or more of full-time CPT at any single degree level eliminates OPT eligibility for that same degree level. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, doesn't count against this limit. Confirm your planned CPT hours with your DSO before accepting a full-time driving schedule.
