Get Access To All JobsService Technician CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Service Technician role qualify for CPT authorization?
It depends on how your school documents the academic connection. Service Technician work in areas like electronics repair, HVAC systems, or mechanical diagnostics typically aligns with engineering technology or applied sciences programs. Your DSO will confirm the link between the specific job duties and your enrolled coursework before authorizing CPT on your I-20.
Can I do CPT as a Service Technician while taking classes full-time?
Yes, but part-time CPT (under 20 hours per week) is the common path during active semesters. Full-time CPT (20 or more hours) is sometimes approved for co-op or practicum terms, but accumulating 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility, so most F-1 students on degree programs avoid it.
What documents does my employer need to complete my CPT paperwork?
Your DSO typically requires a signed offer letter on company letterhead that includes your job title, supervisor name, work location, start and end dates, and weekly hours. Some schools also require a training agreement or learning objectives form that the employer co-signs. Get these documents before submitting your CPT request to avoid delays to your start date.
How do I find Service Technician employers that support CPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you browse Service Technician roles from employers with documented work authorization history so you're not cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with F-1 students. Focus on companies that have previously hired through OPT or CPT, since they already have internal HR processes for onboarding international students.
What happens to my work authorization if my CPT end date passes before the job ends?
You must stop working immediately when your CPT authorization period expires. Working beyond the I-20 CPT end date violates your F-1 status. If the role continues past your authorized period, you'll need your DSO to issue a new I-20 with an extended CPT authorization before you return to work, which requires another formal employer request.
