Does a construction internship qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role is an integral part of your established curriculum and your DSO approves it before you start. Construction internships in project management, site engineering, cost estimating, or structural inspection typically qualify for students in civil engineering, construction management, or architecture programs. The offer letter must describe duties that map directly to your coursework.
Can I work on a federal construction project on CPT?
You can work on federally funded construction projects on CPT, but the contractor must be enrolled in E-Verify, which is required for federal contractors under Executive Order 13465. Confirm E-Verify enrollment with the employer's HR team before your DSO submits the CPT authorization. Some federal project sites also require background clearance, which can extend onboarding timelines.
What construction job titles are typically CPT-eligible?
Roles like construction project engineer, field engineer, estimator, scheduler, and site coordinator are commonly authorized for CPT. The O*NET occupation profiles for these titles document the degree requirements and technical tasks that DSOs and USCIS use to assess whether a role qualifies as a specialty occupation. Avoid titles like general laborer or site worker, which typically don't meet the degree-requirement threshold for CPT eligibility.
How do I find construction employers who've hired CPT students before?
Migrate Mate lets you filter construction employers by Labor Condition Application filing history, which identifies firms that have formally sponsored international employees. Employers with recent LCA filings in construction management or civil engineering occupations have already navigated work authorization requirements and are more likely to process your CPT paperwork without delays.
Does full-time CPT on a construction site affect my OPT eligibility?
Using 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, including the STEM OPT extension. Part-time CPT, regardless of duration, doesn't affect OPT. If your construction internship runs a full semester or co-op year at 40 hours per week, count those months carefully against your 12-month threshold before accepting a full-time arrangement.
