Get Access To All JobsHVAC Technician CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does HVAC Technician work qualify as CPT for an F-1 student?
Yes, if your degree program includes coursework in HVAC systems, mechanical engineering, or building technology, hands-on technician work can qualify. Your DSO makes the final determination by reviewing whether the specific job duties are an integral part of your curriculum. Not every HVAC role will qualify for every program, so confirm the match before accepting an offer.
Can I do CPT as an HVAC Technician if my degree is in a related but not identical field?
Your degree doesn't have to be called HVAC Technology. Programs in mechanical engineering technology, energy systems, or building automation can support CPT authorization for technician roles if the coursework covers thermodynamics, refrigeration cycles, or controls. Your DSO will look at whether the job duties connect to what you're studying, not just the program name.
How do I find HVAC employers who are comfortable with F-1 CPT authorization?
Search Migrate Mate for HVAC Technician roles and filter by employers with F-1 work authorization history. Mechanical contractors, commercial facilities firms, and equipment manufacturers tend to have more experience with work authorization paperwork than small residential service companies. Asking directly during your first call whether they've hired F-1 students before saves time.
Does full-time CPT as an HVAC Technician affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. USCIS rules state that 12 months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, doesn't count against that limit. If you plan to use OPT after graduation, track your full-time CPT hours carefully and discuss the tradeoff with your DSO before accepting a full-time technician role.
What documentation does an HVAC employer need from me to process my CPT?
Your employer needs your CPT-authorized I-20 before your start date. That I-20 lists the employer name, authorized dates, and whether the CPT is part-time or full-time. Some employers, especially those enrolled in E-Verify, will also verify your work authorization through the E-Verify portal. Provide the updated I-20 and your passport to complete their onboarding paperwork.
