CPT Industrial Electrician Jobs
Industrial Electrician CPT positions let F-1 students apply electrical theory to real commercial and industrial systems while earning academic credit. Your DSO must authorize each CPT placement before you start work, and the role must tie directly to your program's learning objectives. Union apprenticeship sites, manufacturing plants, and facilities management contractors are the most common CPT employers in this trade.

Job Purpose
As an Electrical Engineering Intern, you will assist in the design, component selection, and documentation of industrial electrical control panels. This includes ensuring all designs meet rigorous safety standards and are optimized for both performance and manufacturability. You will work with Product Development and Manufacturing Engineering to optimize the build, troubleshooting, programming of smart devices and verify function of the electrical system as part of industrial power generation.
Key Responsibilities
- Component Selection & Specification: Research and select industrial components including circuit breakers, power supplies (AC/DC), disconnect switches, and relays based on load requirements and environmental factors.
- Panel Layout & Wire Routing: Assist in developing spatial layouts for enclosures to ensure proper heat dissipation and logical wire duct routing.
- Schematic Development: Update and maintain electrical schematics, ensuring accurate representation of terminal blocks, I/O mapping, and power distribution.
- Safety & Compliance: Apply UL 508A and NFPA 70 (NEC) standards to designs, focusing on Short Circuit Current Ratings (SCCR) and proper grounding.
- Labeling & Documentation: Create comprehensive wire tagging schedules and panel faceplate labeling to ensure ease of maintenance and operator safety.
- Prototyping & Testing: Support the shop floor during the assembly phase to troubleshoot routing issues and perform initial power-up testing.
What we are looking for
- Education: Currently enrolled in a B.S. or M.S. program in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field.
- Technical Skills: Basic understanding of Ohm’s Law and 3-phase power systems.
- Familiarity with CAD software (AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, or EPLAN).
- Knowledge of common industrial control components (PLCs, VFDs, contactors).
- Soft Skills: High attention to detail, strong technical writing abilities, and a "safety-first" mindset.
Physical and Environmental Requirements:
- Ability to work in both an office environment and a production/lab setting.
- Occasional use of hand tools for prototyping (wire strippers, crimpers, multimeters).
What we offer
You won't just be "shadowing"—you will be contributing to live projects that power heavy industrial systems. This Co-Op offers a deep dive into the bridge between theoretical circuit design and rugged, real-world application.
Join the company that is creating solutions that support a cleaner, more energy-efficient world.

Does CPT authorization cover union apprenticeship placements for industrial electricians?
It can, but your school must approve the placement as curricular. Union apprenticeship programs are structured training environments, which often satisfy DSO requirements. You'll need documentation from the union hall confirming your duties, hours, and training objectives. Submit that alongside your offer letter when requesting your CPT I-20 update from your DSO.
Can I work on a CPT industrial electrician job while classes are not in session?
Only if your CPT authorization explicitly covers that period. Part-time CPT is tied to an academic term, and full-time CPT requires enrollment in at least one credit. If you want to work over a summer break, your school must authorize summer CPT and you must be enrolled in a qualifying summer course or co-op credit.
How do I find industrial electrician employers who understand CPT work authorization?
Search Migrate Mate to find employers with F-1 work authorization experience in electrical and industrial roles. Manufacturing plants, facilities management firms, and electrical contractors that already hire international students tend to have HR staff familiar with CPT onboarding paperwork, which speeds up your I-9 completion and start date.
Will doing more than 12 months of full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility?
Yes. If you accumulate 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you lose eligibility for OPT entirely. Part-time CPT doesn't count toward that limit. For industrial electrician students planning to transition to post-graduation OPT or STEM OPT, stay under the 12-month full-time threshold by using part-time CPT or limiting full-time placements.
What documentation does an industrial electrician CPT employer need from me on day one?
Bring your updated I-20 with CPT authorization for the specific employer, your valid F-1 visa stamp, your passport, and your I-94 record. Your employer completes your I-9 using these documents. The I-20 must list the correct employer name, job title, and dates. Any mismatch between your offer letter and your I-20 will block your I-9 completion.
