Get Access To All JobsManufacturing CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a manufacturing co-op count as CPT?
Yes, if your school's curriculum formally requires or offers academic credit for the co-op experience. Manufacturing co-ops at companies like automotive suppliers or electronics manufacturers qualify as CPT when your DSO can tie the placement to a specific course or program requirement on your I-20. The key is prior authorization, you can't start work and apply retroactively.
Can I do CPT at a manufacturing facility in a different state from my school?
Yes. CPT placement location doesn't need to match your school's state, but your DSO must still authorize it and update your I-20 accordingly. Some schools require additional documentation for remote or out-of-state placements, so confirm your institution's policy. The employer's physical address for the work site must appear on your I-20 authorization.
What job titles in manufacturing typically qualify for CPT?
CPT-eligible manufacturing titles include process engineer, quality assurance technician, industrial engineering intern, supply chain analyst, and manufacturing operations associate, among others. The O*NET database categorizes these under Standard Occupational Classification codes that map to engineering, production, and operations programs. Your DSO uses that program-to-role alignment to approve the CPT authorization.
How do I find manufacturing employers who have hired CPT students before?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find manufacturers with verified work authorization history for international students. You can filter for CPT-compatible roles and see which companies have a track record of sponsoring students. Your school's career center may also maintain a list of co-op partners who have completed the CPT authorization process successfully.
Does working full-time in manufacturing on CPT affect my OPT eligibility?
It can. Twelve or more months of full-time CPT, defined as more than 20 hours per week, eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Manufacturing co-ops and internships are often structured as full-time placements, so track your total full-time CPT months carefully across all authorizations. Part-time CPT does not count toward this threshold regardless of how many semesters you use it.
