Job Description:
Marigold’s summer intern program is tailored to individuals who are currently enrolled in fields of study as full-time students at an accredited, four-year college or university in North America. Internships are temporary positions, hired through a local temporary employment agency and typically run from mid-May to mid-August.
This position reports to the Safety, Health & Security Manager, the Industrial Hygiene Intern will typically work 4, 10-hour day shifts which may include occasional weekends, holidays and night shifts.
The Industrial Hygiene Intern is responsible to provide occupational safety and health sampling, guidance, training and support to the departments and personnel at the Marigold Mine.
Key Areas of Responsibilities & Duties:
The key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist IH Team in development of IH initiatives and sampling strategy for site
- Coordinate IH sampling across site, and realization of other IH initiatives
- Assist with MSHA inspections and sampling as directed
- Assist in updating physical demands analyses and health risk assessments
- Sample shipment, data entry, statistical analysis of samples
- Implementation of controls, with an emphasis on engineering controls
- Employee notification of sampling results
- Assist divisions with toolbox and other training sessions as directed
- Conduct new hire health trainings as directed
- Maintain stock of IH sampling supplies and equipment calibration status
- Provide health sampling, noise sampling, and biological sampling as needed
- Monitor and audit effectiveness of all controls in place for health exposures
Key Relationships:
This role requires frequent interaction with department employees, supervision, and management to provide assistance, service and support.
- Ability to build trust and develop great working relationships with site personnel and regulatory agencies.
- Ability to provide strong leadership and act as an effective change agent.
- Ability to interact with all departments or groups as needed, for problem resolution.
Required Skills:
- Working toward a Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health or other related field
- Must be able to complete an internship lasting a minimum of ten (10) weeks at the Marigold mine in Valmy, Nevada
- Full time college student at the Sophomore, Junior, Senior or graduate level majoring in Industrial Hygiene or closely related field
- Must be minimally classified as an incoming Junior for the Fall 2021 semester (proof of enrollment required – must submit with application as attachments)
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (transcripts required – must submit with application as attachments)
- Can have a maximum of two (2) internships with Marigold (this does NOT include summers as working for Marigold as a Summer Student)
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong Leadership skills
- Extensive skills using Microsoft computer systems
- Comfortable giving presentations and speaking to large groups
Required Experience:
- Exposure to conducting Industrial Hygiene sampling for dust/silica, noise, metal fumes and mercury
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Minimum age 18 years
- Ergonomic experience preferred

Does an Industrial Technician role qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if the duties directly relate to your enrolled degree program, typically industrial technology, manufacturing engineering, or a related technical field. Your DSO evaluates the job description against your curriculum, not just the job title. Roles involving equipment maintenance, process control, or quality systems in a relevant industry generally satisfy the integral-to-curriculum requirement USCIS looks for.
Can I do CPT at a small manufacturing facility, or do I need a large company?
Employer size doesn't affect CPT eligibility. What matters is that the facility can provide work that maps to your coursework and that they comply with I-9 and E-Verify requirements. Smaller manufacturers and specialty fabrication shops regularly hire F-1 students on CPT. Migrate Mate lists Industrial Technician openings across employer types so you can identify who has hired work-authorized students previously.
What happens if my Industrial Technician CPT role extends past one semester?
CPT is authorized per semester or academic period, so you need a separate DSO authorization for each term you continue. The critical threshold is 12 months of full-time CPT: crossing that mark eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as under 20 hours per week, does not count toward that limit regardless of how many semesters you accumulate.
Does working as an Industrial Technician on CPT count toward an H-1B specialty occupation?
It can, but the role needs to demonstrate it normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. Use the O*NET profile for your SOC code to document job zone and education requirements. Technician roles that involve applied engineering, instrumentation, or process engineering functions have a stronger specialty occupation argument than general maintenance positions.
Can I switch employers mid-semester on CPT if my Industrial Technician job ends early?
No. Your CPT authorization is tied to the specific employer named on your I-20 endorsement. If that job ends, you must stop working immediately and go back to your DSO for a new authorization listing the replacement employer before starting anywhere else. Starting work at a new facility without updated DSO approval is an unauthorized employment violation, which jeopardizes your F-1 status.
