INTRODUCTION

Position Summary:
Low Voltage Technician Intern Program:
This intern program provides hands-on exposure to the operation, maintenance, and integration of low-voltage ITS and tolling systems. Interns begin by supporting utility locates and preventive maintenance, assisting technicians with identifying underground infrastructure, inspecting equipment, and documenting system conditions. The program then advances to ITS and network operations, where interns gain experience with field devices such as CCTV, DMS, detection systems, and tolling equipment, while learning how these systems communicate through Layer 2 and Layer 3 networks. In the final phase, interns focus on toll system operations, assisting with inspections, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of electronic toll collection infrastructure and observing real-time responses to alarms and outages. Together, these phases build a practical understanding of how ITS and toll systems are maintained and kept operational in live transportation environments.

Does an Electrical Technician role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the work is an integral part of your enrolled curriculum and your DSO approves it. Electrical Technician duties involving circuit maintenance, PLC programming, or instrumentation testing typically align with electrical engineering and industrial technology programs. Your DSO reviews the job description against your course of study, so bring the offer letter and a written explanation of how the role connects to specific courses you're currently taking.
Can I do CPT part-time as an Electrical Technician while taking a full course load?
Yes. Part-time CPT is defined as fewer than 20 hours per week and doesn't affect your OPT eligibility regardless of how many semesters you use it. Full-time CPT, 20 hours or more per week, used for 12 or more months eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Most F-1 students in technical programs choose part-time CPT during the semester and switch to full-time CPT during summer terms to preserve their OPT.
How do I find Electrical Technician employers open to hiring CPT students?
Migrate Mate shows Electrical Technician roles filtered by employers with Labor Condition Application filing history, which signals familiarity with work authorization processes. Focus on manufacturers, utilities, defense contractors, and facilities management companies. These sectors hire technicians at multiple sites and often have HR teams experienced with F-1 students, making the CPT authorization conversation more straightforward than with smaller shops.
What happens to my CPT if my employer changes my job site location?
CPT authorization is tied to the employer and role listed on your I-20, not a specific address. If the employer moves you to a different facility in the same metro area, the work authorization itself doesn't change. But if the location shift changes your reporting DOL, substantially changes your duties, or your school's CPT policy requires a site-specific authorization, you'll need to contact your DSO and potentially get a new I-20 before the transfer.
Can an Electrical Technician CPT role count toward H-1B specialty occupation later?
It depends on how the role is classified. Electrical Technician positions are sometimes coded under technician SOC codes that USCIS treats as sub-baccalaureate roles, which can complicate an H-1B visa specialty occupation argument. If your goal is H-1B sponsorship after graduation, look for roles with titles and job descriptions that emphasize engineering analysis, systems design, or project engineering functions, and confirm the employer has filed H-1B petitions in similar roles before accepting the CPT offer.
