Does a Building Maintenance Mechanic role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if your academic program includes coursework in facilities management, industrial technology, mechanical systems, or a related applied field. Your DSO determines qualification by comparing the role's actual duties, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, structural maintenance, against your enrolled curriculum. The role must be an integral part of your program, not just related to your general field of study.
Can I work full-time as a Building Maintenance Mechanic on CPT?
Full-time CPT is allowed, but 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined as less than 20 hours per week, does not count against your OPT. If you plan to use OPT after graduation, coordinate your CPT hours carefully with your DSO before accepting a full-time facilities role.
What documents do I need to start a CPT job in building maintenance?
You need an updated I-20 with the CPT authorization listed for your specific employer, position, and dates. You also need your F-1 visa stamp for re-entry travel, your I-94 record showing valid status, and a valid passport. Your employer will require these for I-9 completion. CPT does not require an EAD card, the authorized I-20 is your work authorization document.
How do I find Building Maintenance Mechanic employers who hire CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers in the facilities and property management sector who have previously hired F-1 students. Focus on large institutional employers, university facilities departments, healthcare systems, and commercial property managers, which typically have established HR processes for work-authorized students and are familiar with CPT documentation requirements.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my employer changes my job site or duties?
Any material change to your CPT employment, including a different worksite address, a title change, or a shift in core duties, may require an updated I-20. Notify your DSO immediately if your employer reassigns you to a different facility or restructures your responsibilities. Working under conditions that differ from your authorized I-20 details is a status violation even if your original authorization was valid.
