As a Service Technician Intern, you will learn the various types of equipment that United Rentals rents and their applications. You will also learn both manual and maintenance tasks to support the branch operation, as well as, provide labor assistance to seasoned mechanics. Every day, you can improve and challenge yourself, and if you have the desire and ambition, you'll have the potential to work towards service technician roles in our Service Department upon receipt of degree and/or certification. Like every member of our team, we will rely on you to provide exceptional customer service to our customers.
This is a great opportunity for someone currently in or receiving certification from a Technical school or program. Be prepared to enter full time employment whether it be automotive, diesel or any other mechanical background.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED and pursuing technical degree or certification
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
- Strong mechanical aptitude with foundational knowledge of tools and equipment
- Self-motivated with a strong drive and sense of urgency
- Superior customer service, teamwork and verbal/written communication skills
This position is deemed Safety Sensitive for purposes of United Rentals’ policies and procedures.

Can I work full-time as a Construction Equipment Mechanic on CPT?
You can, but full-time CPT (20 or more hours per week) for 12 or more months eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Most F-1 students in hands-on trade programs structure CPT as part-time or limit full-time terms to one or two semesters. Talk to your DSO about how your program handles this before accepting a full-time offer.
How do I find Construction Equipment Mechanic employers open to CPT?

Beyond that, target large construction contractors, equipment rental companies, and municipal fleet departments, they operate structured training programs and are more familiar with the documentation CPT requires than smaller independent shops.
What documents does my CPT employer need from me?
Your employer needs your I-20 with the CPT authorization printed on page two, your F-1 visa, your passport, and a completed I-9 form on or before your first day of work. Some employers also request a copy of your SEVIS record or a letter from your DSO confirming program enrollment. Never start work before your I-20 reflects the CPT authorization for that specific position.
Does CPT as a Construction Equipment Mechanic count toward H-1B eligibility later?
CPT work experience in a relevant mechanical or engineering field can strengthen an H-1B visa specialty occupation argument, but the role itself must qualify as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree. Construction Equipment Mechanic roles typically qualify through a mechanical engineering or heavy equipment technology degree. The LCA your employer files must list the appropriate SOC code and prevailing wage for the position.
