What kinds of HVAC roles qualify for CPT authorization?
Roles that qualify are those directly tied to your academic program, such as HVAC design, systems commissioning, energy modeling, or hands-on installation and maintenance tied to an engineering or building technology curriculum. A general labor position that doesn't connect to your coursework won't pass your DSO's review. The job description your employer provides needs to reference the technical competencies your program teaches.
Can I work for an HVAC contractor rather than a large corporation?
Yes. Small and mid-size HVAC contractors regularly hire CPT students, and there's no company-size requirement under F-1 CPT rules. The key factors are that the employer is a legitimate U.S. business, the work is authorized on your I-20, and the training is integral to your program. Confirm the contractor is enrolled in E-Verify if the work involves federal buildings or government contracts.
Does full-time CPT affect my post-graduation OPT eligibility?
It can. Twelve months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT of any duration and full-time CPT under 12 months don't affect OPT. If you're planning to transition to OPT after graduation, track your full-time CPT usage carefully and discuss the cumulative total with your DSO before accepting a full-time HVAC position.
How do I find HVAC employers who are already comfortable with CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you filter HVAC and mechanical systems roles by employers with active LCA filing history, which identifies companies that have already navigated work authorization paperwork. That prior experience typically means HR and hiring managers understand CPT documentation requirements rather than encountering them for the first time when you bring your authorization letter.
What documents does my HVAC employer need from me on day one?
Bring your current I-20 with the CPT authorization page listing that employer, your F-1 visa stamp, your passport, and your I-94 arrival record. Your employer uses these for Form I-9 completion. The I-20 CPT page replaces the EAD for CPT work authorization purposes. Keep digital copies and confirm the start date on the I-20 exactly matches the date you begin work.
