Do plumber jobs qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your academic program includes a practicum, co-op, or internship component tied to plumbing technology, construction management, or a related trade field. The role must be an integral part of your curriculum, not just related to your major. Your DSO reviews the job description and confirms whether the specific duties satisfy that requirement before issuing CPT authorization.
Can I work full-time as a plumber on CPT?
You can work full-time on CPT, but any cumulative full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Most F-1 students in trade programs structure their CPT as part-time during the semester and full-time during breaks to protect post-graduation options. Confirm the hours with your DSO before accepting a full-time offer.
How do I find plumbing employers willing to hire CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate for plumbing and construction employers that have hired international students on CPT or OPT. Contractors already enrolled in E-Verify and those working on commercial or government projects tend to have HR processes in place for work authorization documentation, making onboarding smoother for F-1 students.
What documents does a plumbing employer need from me for CPT?
Your employer needs your CPT-authorized I-20, which lists the employer name, start and end dates, and whether the authorization is part-time or full-time. They'll also complete the I-9 using your I-20 and your foreign passport. Some contractors request your SEVIS ID for their own records. Your DSO issues the updated I-20 only after the employer and position details are confirmed.
Does the plumbing job title on my I-20 need to match my offer letter exactly?
The employer name and employment dates must match your CPT authorization on your I-20. The job title doesn't need to be word-for-word identical, but the duties described in your offer letter must align with what your DSO authorized. If the employer changes your title or shifts your responsibilities after authorization, notify your DSO to determine whether a new CPT authorization is required.
