Get Access To All JobsRepair Technician CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Repair Technician role qualify for CPT authorization?
It depends on whether the role connects to your field of study. A Repair Technician position in electronics or industrial systems typically qualifies for students in engineering technology, mechatronics, or applied science programs. Your DSO makes the final call based on how the job duties map to your curriculum, not the job title alone.
Can I do CPT for a Repair Technician role at a small independent shop?
Yes, but small employers often lack experience with F-1 work authorization. You'll need to provide your DSO with a formal offer letter detailing duties and hours, and the employer must be a legitimate U.S. business entity. Shops that pay cash or don't issue W-2s don't qualify because CPT requires verifiable, authorized employment.
How do I find Repair Technician employers open to CPT students?
Repair Technician roles appear across manufacturing, HVAC, automotive, and electronics sectors, but not every employer understands CPT authorization. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with a history of hiring international students, so you can focus outreach on companies that won't reject you at the offer stage for being on F-1 status.
Does full-time CPT as a Repair Technician affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, per USCIS rules. Part-time CPT has no such limit. If your Repair Technician role is a semester-long co-op running 40 hours per week, that time counts toward your full-time CPT total, so track it carefully with your DSO from the start.
What documents does my employer need to start my CPT authorization?
Your DSO needs an offer letter before they can issue a CPT-amended I-20. The letter should include your job title, specific duties, location, hourly schedule, start and end dates, and supervisor contact information. Once your DSO issues the updated I-20, you can verify your authorization through USCIS records and share it with your employer before your first day.
